18. BUILDING YOUR OWN
LEDs: ~$4/100pcs
Pushbuttons: ~$3/25pcs
Photo resistors: $2.30/20pcs
Assorted potentiometers: ~$4.50/130pcs
LCD Screen 16x2: ~$7.50/1pc
Pressure Sensor: $5/1pc
Accelerometer: ~$3/1pc
19. ADAPTIVE TOYS
CodeMash 2016
Microsoft partnered with students from Ohio
State University to put on a workshop for
attendees to rebuild toys for children with
disabilities.
Donated to Katelyn’s Kloset- an adaptive toy
library.
Always in need of more adapted toys.
Libraries are limited in what kinds of toys they
can carry or how many libraries exist.
21. “ Since 2014, the Game Developer’s Conference has
recognized this emerging category in games with its
own special exhibit called alt.ctrl.GDC, a space dedicated
specifically to games with alternative controllers that
“challenge traditional forms of input.” Now in its third
year, submissions have more than doubled since the
exhibit’s creation. This year’s edition features 20 games
chosen from a pool of over 140 games submitted. Over
at IndieCade, a festival dedicated to independent games,
a similar boon is afoot—with submissions of games with
nontraditional controllers doubling in the span of one
year.

What is a custom controller?
History of controllers and arcades.

How do I build my own controller?
Greater accessibility with custom controllers.
For those in the audience who are more technical, I hope this is a call to action.
How can we change the nature of interactivity? How can we move past the traditional handheld controller?
New kind of critical thinking about games for audiences who may be familiar with games but not be familiar with game design.
How many of you are developers?
For those in the audience who are more technical, I hope this is a call to action.
Nothing makes us feel closer to gaming than feeling like we’re a part of it.
Controllers are how we interact with our game.
Most controllers now feature one or more joysticks, a direction pad, and a number of buttons. As successful as this model is, it greatly limits interactivity between player and game. Developers are forced to utilize this input or require extra equipment, which deters them from creating their own controllers because of added cost and production and inherently limits the possibility of a richer player experience.
3ds immersion- animal crossing example. Simulation + 3d
What happens when we use other kinds of controllers?
Compare/contrast w previous slide
VR arcades are being built now
Modern theme park rides – Toy Story Mania
Now it’s more cost effective to create custom controllers
A new twist on old ideas
People can see different worlds, now they want to interact with them.
Simple is better, you don’t need a keyboard
We’ve always done make believe, we’re just now expanding on our imagination. Games should be an extension of that. VR is exploring that right now
How did we go from nothing -> arcade cabinets -> now
We try to immerse ourselves in our worlds and try to bring our fantasies to life. Through books, plays, then movies, and now games/VR.
Your phone can control anything – Fibbage/Jack Party Pack
Your body is a control – Just Dance/Kinect
A piece of paper can be your controller – Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes
Don’t have to build a one-of-a-kind controller to do something custom/unique
Some games shown off at Alt.Ctrl at GDC
Creating custom controllers used to involve hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of prototyping and production.
Now Raspberry Pi and sensors will cost you less than $75.
3d printing/laser cutting also getting cheaper
The modern immersion. Modern controllers, and simulation.
So many simulator games. Immersion. Tycoon series.
Games are: an artform, fun, but also a way to escape
How many of you have played smash and seen this guy? How many of you know he helped saved the video game industry after the north American video game crash of 1983?
We’ve talked about how things were and are. But what about where things are going.

What happens when we use other kinds of controllers?
Example of a non-traditional wearable controller
We’ve already tried to recreate the gun in our controllers.
Wearables aren’t dead
What happens when we use other kinds of controllers?
Demonstrative of immersion through interaction with a custom controller. The most physical you can get.
The Lightning Bug game is a two-person interactive game experience, using costumes embedded with technology, projection on a half dome surface and custom software. The players represent the last remaining lightning bugs in a world consumed by pollution, and must cooperate with each other in order to fight against a virtual enemy of darkness. Each player has a distinct role — one player shoots and the other collects power — and they both must help each other by hold hands in order to transfer power from one player to the other in order to fight. This is a part of a larger exploration of various questions explored when considering the potential of costumes as game controllers.
Like Kaho Abe’s Hotaru, these games rely on interaction and group control to immerse
Artemis Spaceship bridge simulator + Spaceteam
Custom mechanics vs. controllers

Kits to get started with if you’re not EE
Actual physical gaming anything can be a controller
Went on amazon, did a bit of shopping
Perhaps with the rise of developers making custom controlled games we will move back to the arcade model
Codemash: the 2-hour workshop, 150 attendees were able to retrofit 62 toys with adapters for special capability switches.
Impact of immersion and custom controllers
We’ve seed a lot of examples, but what about if you want to make your own?
Afraid of the Dark
Historically video game cabinets experimented with custom controllers. We moved away from this model and are we returning to it?
