J. FOCUS OF RESEARCH AND CONTRIBUTION TO KNOWLEDGE:
My research activities have focused on Epistemology, as is concerned with the
questions of knowledge and Truth, as well as, on Metaphysics, which concerns itself with
questions of the ultimate constituents of the universe. A thematic emphasis is laid on the
application of knowledge from these two prominent areas of Philosophy to Metaphysical,
Epistemological, Ethical, Social and Political thoughts in Africa.
Apart from doing some work in the Western Metaphysics and Philosophy of
mind, exploring the question concerning the ultimate constituent of a Person, I have also
extended the research to the Yoruba (African) conception of human Person, critically
applying the already tested paradigms in the Western Metaphysics. From the various
discussions on human Person in Yoruba (African) Metaphysics, some metaphysical
problems as: Immortality of soul, the epistemological and logical problems associated
with a conjunction of Ancestral worship and Reincarnation, the metaphysical and ethical
problems of Determinism and moral responsibility, Life-boat ethics, as well as, the
politico-economic implications of the rise in the phenomenon of religion, among others,
were raised and critically discussed.
My research in Epistemology has yielded some critical statement and analyses of
the possibility, or otherwise, of foundationalist account of Knowledge and Truth. This
critical participation in the discussion and assessment of the foundationalist Epistemology
has afforded me the opportunity to examine African gnosis as well as knowledge
production in Africa within the globalised foundationalist epistemic order.
12
13. I have also extended my research efforts to the area of Philosophy of culture. This
attempt led to the examination of the various cultural values encapsulated in various
forms of linguistic expressions in Yoruba language. The upshot of this is to apply the
tools of Philosophy to the examination of some of these cultural values (thus extracted
from Yoruba linguistic expressions) and examine their plausibility or otherwise in the
present context of Postmodernism and Globalization.
The results of these researches can be of assistance to researchers in the areas of
epistemic justification, mind-body problems, and African philosophical studies. The
research is also expected to be of assistance to African social and Political policy makers.
