Whole language is an approach to literacy instruction that emphasizes learning to read through meaningful uses of whole texts rather than through isolated skill drills. In contrast, phonics instruction focuses on teaching students the relationships between written letters and sounds through explicit instruction in sound-symbol relationships. These two approaches to early reading instruction have been debated among educators.
