Cultural CompetencyCultural Competency Self-AssessmentThis resource was adapted from "Cultural Competency Self-Assessment Checklist," from the Refugee Assistance Program Workers website (rapworkers.com). This cultural competency self-assessment will allow you to identify your assets and weaknesses as a leader. By doing so, you will be able to gain insight into how you can improve your own self-leadership skills.
Read each entry in the categories of Awareness, Knowledge, Skills, Physical Environment, Materials, and Resources and Values and Attitudes.
For each entry (row), place a number “1” in the column that corresponds with your selection (Never, Sometimes/Occasionally, Fairly Often/Pretty Well, and Always/Very Well). You will only have one selection per entry (row).
The Excel spreadsheet will tally up your results and provide you with a total for each category.
This self-assessment is not a test and will not have a right or wrong answer. The self-assessment should only be used as a tool to help you identify areas of strength and areas that might need further development. Importance of Vaccination
Mary's one year old daughter is due to be given the Measles, Mumps, and Rubella (MMR) vaccine during her next visit to the doctor. Mary is upset and concerned because one of her friend's sons became ill after a similar vaccination. She has also heard rumors that MMR vaccine causes rubella. Mary was also told that her daughter will need to be vaccinated before Mary returns to work.

-xxxxd, unfortunately there isn’t any Ethical Code of Conduct that all countries follow to the letter. “When in Rome, you act as the Romans does.” Therefore, Chiquita did what they thought was right under the circumstances. Rather it was for profit or to save the lives of its employees. Their decision may have been considered unethical by the United States standards. But, to them it was the right thing to do to eliminate human causality. A lot of these atrocities stem from the wide gap in wealth distribution, corruption, and greed at the highest level in the government infrastructure. Not too long ago in the distant past in the United States, the government, politicians, influential business men and part of society partake in various atrocities as well against several groups of people all in the name of greed, profit, and racism. At the time, they felt their actions was justified, and continued the course without deviation.

It helped me to understand more clearly that they would be denied rights such as voting, holding public office etc. It is truly not a black or white answer, but a very gray area. I know in some instances yes I could see businesses get that but due to the circumstances they were truly put into a no win situation. Even if they went to the authorities they would probably have been found out and then they would end up still tortured and killed.

Think about important events and talk to family members to help you chronicle the major milestones of your life. What were some things that impacted your development in each of Erikson's stages? For each stage you have completed up to now, do you believe that you have achieved mostly the positive outcome or mostly the negative outcome and
why or why not
?
·
identify and name at least 4 specific Erikson stages
as you discuss them (Name it like "trust vs. mistrust", etc.).
This is very important and loses big points if you neglect to do this!
4 specific Erikson stages
1. INFANCY: BIRTH-18 MONTHS OLD
Basic Trust vs. Mistrust – Hope
During the first or second year of life, the major emphasis is on the mother and father’s nurturing ability and care for a child, especially in terms of visual contact and touch. The child will develop optimism, trust, confidence, and security if properly cared for and handled. If a child does not experience trust, he or she may develop insecurity, worthlessness, and general mistrust to the world.
2. TODDLER / EARLY CHILDHOOD YEARS: 18 MONTHS TO 3 YEARS
Autonomy vs. Shame – Will
The second stage occurs between 18 months and 3 years. At this point, the child has an opportunity to build self-esteem and autonomy as he or she learns new skills and right from wrong. The well-cared for child is sure of himself, carrying himself or herself with pride rather than shame. During this time of the “terrible twos”, defiance, temper tantrums, and stubbornness can also appear. Children tend to be vulnerable during this stage, sometimes feeling shame and and low self-esteem during an inability to learn certain skills.
3. PRESCHOOLER: 3 TO 5 YEARS
Initiative vs. Guilt – Purpose
During this period we experience a desire to copy the adults around us and take initiative in creating play situations. We make up stories with Barbie’s and Ken’s, toy phones and miniature cars, playing out roles in a trial universe, experimenting with the blueprint for what we believe it means to be an adult. We also begin to use that wonderful word for exploring the world—”WHY?”
While Erikson was influenced by Freud, he downplays biological sexuality in favor of the psychosocial features of conflict between child and parents. Nevertheless, he said that at this stage we usually become involved in the classic “Oedipal struggle” and resolve this struggle through “social role identification.” If we’re frustrated over natural desires and goals, we may easily experience guilt.
The most significant relationship is with the basic family.

Things to consider with websitesAuthority -- what are the autho.docxOllieShoresna
Things to consider with websites:
Authority
-- what are the author's experience, credentials, or affiliations? What are their affiliations? look for sources with named authors who have the experience and knowledge
Credibility
-- where is the author getting their information? Do they list their sources?
Audience/Purpose
-- is the author speaking to a particular audience? Do they have a particular perspective, or agenda? Are they trying to sell you something?
Currency
-- does the website have a date? Is it maintained and updated?
PROMPT 1
Most characteristics in humans are not Mendelian but a few of them are. Using reliable websites, find information about Mendelian characteristics in humans (or other animals). You might also look for information about traits that we used to think were Mendelian but now know are polygenic. Include the URL for any sites you use.
PROMPT 2
Epigenetics is an exciting emerging field in genetics that has the promise of helping us finally put to rest the so-called "nature v. nurture" debate. The Carey article mentions several examples of epigenetics in humans. Using reliable websites, find information about other examples of epigenetics in humans or other animals. Include the URL for any sites you use.
PROMPT 3
Darwin did not know about Mendel's work with pea plants while he was developing the theory of evolution by natural selection, which means that, although he elegantly described natural selection and provided a great deal of evidence for it, he did not know how traits were passed from parents to offspring. In the 20th century, as more was learned about DNA and genetics, Darwin's work and Mendel's work were finally put together and the
mechanism
for how traits were passed from parents to offspring became understood. This is what we call the Modern Synthesis, which was a significant expansion in evolutionary theory, building on Darwin's ideas. The modern synthesis largely focused on how variation is produced and distributed in populations. What are the 4 main mechanisms for the production and distribution of variation in populations? Using course materials and the Internet, find some specific examples of each kind.
PROMPT 4
Evolutionary theory predicts that deleterious genetic diseases, like Tay-Sachs, will be selected out of populations and, therefore, occur at a very low rate. However, Tay-Sachs is a disease that occurs at a surprisingly high rate among Ashkenazi Jews. Diamond's article, "Curse and Blessing of the Ghetto", demonstrates how evolutionary theory can help explain why some genetic diseases are more common in some populations than others. Diamond presents 4 possible hypotheses to explain why Tay-Sachs is more common among Ashkenazi Jews than other populations. What are the 4 hypotheses he proposes? Which is the hypothesis he argues is the most plausible explanation?
In discussing this question, you can also integrate information about the genetics of TS and protein synthesis to help demons.

Think_Vision W5- Importance of Vaccination
Importance of Vaccination
Mary's one year old daughter is due to be given the Measles, Mumps, and Rubella (MMR) vaccine during her next visit to the doctor. Mary is upset and concerned because one of her friend's sons became ill after a similar vaccination. She has also heard rumors that MMR vaccine causes rubella. Mary was also told that her daughter will need to be vaccinated before Mary returns to work.
Mary is not alone. Many parents face this issue. Therefore, it is important for Mary and all such parents to make decisions that are best for their children, based on facts and not emotions.
Place yourself in the role of a health care worker, submit to the discussion area your plan to validate the importance of vaccination by addressing the following questions:
Why are vaccinations necessary components of the healthcare programs?
Are there reasons for people not being vaccinated despite of such elaborate healthcare programs? Explain.
What are the consequences of people not being vaccinated?
What is the impact of religious, cultural, legal, and ethical issues that parents need to consider before vaccination?
What type of information will help the parents make an informed decision about vaccinating their children?

?
·
identify and name at least 4 specific Erikson stages
as you discuss them (Name it like "trust vs. mistrust", etc.).
4.

Rokeach Values Survey
Developed by Milton Rokeach in 1973, the purpose of the
Rokeach Values Survey is to classify human values and help
individuals better understand what is important to them. Values
themselves are not seen, instead one can see the behaviors
associated with what people value.
There are two types of values in this survey:
· Terminal Values: Terminal values represent desired end states.
Something a person would like to achieve in his/her own
lifetime. Examples would be true friendship, mature love,
national security, world peace, salvation, a comfortable life.
Terminal values are achievable items.
· Instrumental Values: Instrumental values represent “modes of
behavior.” In other words, a means of achieving your terminal
values. (Think of these values as instruments by which you
accomplish your terminal values). Examples include ambition,
love, self-control, politeness, honesty, independence. The focus
of instrumental values is on acting in a manner to achieve the
5. value.
Complete a Rokeach Values Survey for yourself by ranking the
Rokeach values listed in the table below in order of importance.
Focus on only one set of values at a time.
· Ranking Terminal Values: Begin by focusing only on the list
of terminal values. Select the value that is most important to
you. As you go through the list of terminal values, rank each
value from most to least importance for you with 1 being most
important and 18 being least important to you. Work through
the list of terminal values until all terminal values are assigned
a ranking.
· Ranking Instrumental Values: When you have finished ranking
your terminal values, proceed to the list of instrumental values,
and rank each in the same way your terminal values with a
ranking of 1 for the most important instrumental value, and 18
for the least important instrumental value.
Once you have completed ranking all 18 terminal values and all
18 instrumental values, make sure to make note of both your top
values in each category. You will utilize this data in the Topic 2
Self-Reflection Essay.
