Cultural competence and cultural safety are approaches for providing respectful and appropriate healthcare to all patients, regardless of culture or background. Cultural competence focuses on developing awareness and knowledge of different cultural groups to better understand patients' needs and perspectives. Cultural safety emphasizes reflecting on one's own biases and privileges and prioritizing the patient's feelings of safety and empowerment over clinical tasks or skills. Both aim to reduce health disparities but cultural safety may more directly address power imbalances and institutional discrimination in healthcare systems.
