Cuban and Dominican cigars are cultivated and hand-rolled using tobacco leaves grown in the rich soil and tropical climates of Cuba and the Dominican Republic, producing flavorful and strong cigars. While Cuba was first to develop the cigar industry, the quality of Cuban hand-rolled cigars has declined with high demand, whereas the Dominican Republic has inherited and maintained Cuba's tradition of high-quality handcrafted cigars. The Dominican cigar industry grew as Cuban tobacco farmers fled Fidel Castro's regime in the 1960s, and Dominican cigars are now on par or comparable to traditional Cuban cigars.
