Spectra is a system that allows resource-intensive applications to execute remotely on servers to preserve resources on mobile devices. It uses a self-tuning approach to monitor resources like CPU, network bandwidth, battery life, and file caches to dynamically determine the best execution plan. Spectra consists of an application interface, resource monitors that predict resource needs, and a decision engine that chooses the best location and processing method based on available resources and user metrics like execution latency and battery life. An evaluation of a speech recognition application showed promise, but weaknesses included the need for application modifications and lack of optimal execution planning. Future work involves the Chroma system to improve on these weaknesses.
