The concept of X was introduced in 2005, in which each team can have one player
who had to be named before the toss and can be brought at any stage of the
game. X is different from 12th man, he can bowl, bat, field and can do wicket
keeping unlike 12th man. This change was criticized by the captains as the team

this rule was withdrawn by the ICC.
Y, an Udaipur born cricketer was the First ever X in the ODI cricket. He came in to

ENG at the MCG, Melbourne. X had the honour of facing the first ball ever bowled in
Test cricket and scoring the first ever run in Test cricket. In the same Match, he also

bowled out for a meagre total of 245. X scored 67.34% of total runs and still after 138
years of cricket holds the world record for that.
Y, recently came close to break X’s record but got out after scoring 94 and West Indies

The ‘Indian spin quartet’ is the collective name given to the Indian spin
bowlers of the 1960s and 70s. Between them, they played 231 Test matches,

Chaminda Vaas (ODI), Irfan Pathan (Tests) and by Malinga (4 in 4) .
But this one by X is quite special. X has a unique distinction of taking a hat-trick spread
across three overs and two innings! At the WACA, Perth in 1988-89, he completed a hat-trick
spread across three separate overs, two innings, and two different days. He got rid of Curtly
Ambrose caught behind with the last ball of his over and ended West Indies’ first innings in
his next over, by removing Patrick Patterson on the very first ball; and then in the second
innings after more than a day, completed his hat-trick by trapping Gordon Greenidge lbw on
the first ball of West Indies’ second innings.
X was perhaps one of the best at the art of sledging and was popular for his big moustache.
The popularity was such that it was rumored that he has insured it for £200,000 which later

game in 128 Test matches & also in 181 One Day Internationals. X, before being
involved in cricket, was a football player, a high school mathematics teacher and a
sports coach. He was also seen on the field in a Football World Cup Qualifier
Match. He also played as a goalkeeper in Jamaican parish leagues in the 1960s.
Nicknamed ‘Slow Death’, X was awarded the Order of Jamaica, Commander

In a triangular tournament in Australia with Zimbabwe, Australia and West Indies, Zimbabwe
played their final match with Australia and X got a chance in the team. Zimbabwe needed 15 runs
to win the match in the final over, which was to be bowled by Glenn McGrath. X moved across to
the first and third balls he received from McGrath and scooped them over his shoulder to fine leg
for boundaries, reviving hopes of an incredible Zimbabwe victory. But he was just unable to
complete the job, and his team lost by two runs.

This was rather odd, coming from X. But, he did ask Sarwan the question; and Sarwan
responded: “I don’t know. Ask your wife.”
Under normal circumstances, X would have accepted that he’d asked for it. While a little
voice pleaded for him to ignore it, something just wouldn’t allow him to let the slur go
unchallenged. X’s fingers were pointed at Sarwan, and the words that came out of his mouth
were not exactly the kind you’d associate with the legend.

This definitely has to be one of the greatest innings in ODI cricket. They won the
toss and elected to bat on a bouncy pitch at Tunbridge Wells and got off to a
disastrous start, losing 5 wickets for 17 runs as the Zimbabwean bowlers led by
Kevin Curran made full use of the helpful conditions.
The irony of the whole effort was that was that the match was not covered live by
BBC, the broadcasters of the tournament as they were on a strike that day and
hence no video footage of the game is available. The ground was ruled as too
small with ‘the two countries’ being deemed too ‘irrelevant’ for a camera crew to
