Do not ignore the execution aspects before signing a deal!
1. Most business development teams primarily focus on deal identification, negotiations,
finalizing terms and closing contracts. During this phase, the only people involved are
members of business development, finance, marketing and certain product managers.
2. We recommend that before you finalize the deal terms, have wide ranging discussions
between the execution teams of both parties so that they have a good idea of what to
expect when the deal is signed. This includes extensive discussions about every major
process step across R&D, product development, supply chain, IT, sales, post-sales
services, marketing, manufacturing operations, conflict management and revenue
recognition.
3. If step 2 is done correctly, then execution of all deals (e.g. licensing, collaboration, co-
development, co-marketing, sales distribution, OEM, strategic partnering, joint
ventures etc.) will go smoothly.
