Key feature: Design Foundations is a new grant programme to help
businesses identify innovation opportunities and generate better
propositions for desirable, useful and feasible products, services and
business models. The aim is to build collaborations between businesses
looking for new ways to innovate, and designers with the creative tools to
provide this insight. It means using design interventions to address critical
business challenges.

Key feature: The Centre for Connected and Autonomous Vehicles
(CCAV) has a £100 million fund to invest in CAV test bed infrastructure.
This competition is for up to £55 million in projects to develop connected
and autonomous vehicle (CAV) testing infrastructure. The aim is to
create the world’s most effective CAV testing ecosystem. Proposals
should integrate existing proving grounds and public road test sites
across the UK’s existing automotive and technology heartlands. They
should improve current capabilities and create new ones.

deadline: noon on 28.06.17.
Key feature: Innovate UK and Jiangsu Science and Technology
Department will both invest in UK collaborative research and
development (R&D) projects. The aim of this competition is to stimulate
economic growth in China and the UK through projects in one of the
following areas: innovation in infrastructure systems that address the
challenges faced by infrastructure owners, cities, towns and users OR
transformational or disruptive innovation leading to novel, new products,
processes or services drawn from any technology, engineering or
industrial area. Projects should lead to a significant return on investment
and have a clear and anticipated impact on business growth.

deadline: noon on 28.06.17.
Key feature: Innovate UK and the Science and Technology Commission
Department of Shanghai Municipality, will both invest in UK collaborative
research and development (R&D) projects. The Science and Technology
Commission Department of Shanghai Municipality will allocate funding
for R&D performing Shanghai-registered companies. The aim of this
competition is to stimulate economic growth in China and the UK through
projects in future cities OR transformational or disruptive innovation.

8. Opens: 19.04.17. Registration deadline: noon on 07.06.17. Application
deadline: noon on 14.06.17.
Key feature: The Department for Transport (DfT) will fund up to
£470,000 for innovative projects that lead to more walking and cycling.
Proposals will tackle current barriers and encourage more journey
stages to be made by bicycle or on foot. Innovations may include, for
example, technology, infrastructure, manufacturing or behavioural
change. The competition is open to individuals, groups and
organisations. It is particularly suitable for early-stage, small and
medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Industry partners such as local
government, independent and third sectors can carry out the project on
their own or with others.

Innovation in cycling and walking

9. Opens: 19.04.17. Application deadline: noon on 21.06.17.
Key feature: The Ministry of Defence is to invest in projects that look at
ways of using autonomous systems in the ‘last mile’ of the supply chain
to front-line military operations. Last-mile resupply involves delivery of
combat materials from a physical base or logistics vehicle and is often
challenging because of the hostile and contested environment. Current
ways of supplying the front line involve transport aircraft, helicopters,
large trucks, trailers with quad bikes and soldiers on foot.

10. Opens: 02.05.17. Registration deadline: noon on 30.08.17. Application
deadline noon on: 06.09.17.
Key feature: Innovate UK is investing up to £3 million for projects that
use cutting-edge solutions to improve cities in Malaysia. The aim of this
competition is to encourage innovative partnerships between the UK and
Malaysia. Innovate UK and PlaTCOM Ventures, Malaysia are funding
this competition, administered by the Newton Fund.
Projects should address one or more of the following urban challenges:
• urban mobility
• urban waste
• urban water management

Horizon 2020: Security: Businesses can apply for a share of €130
million under Secure Societies – protecting freedom and security of
Europe and its citizens work programme. Opens: 01.03.17.
