JOINT PAIN
Arthralgia - Joint pain without significant joint
inflammation or swelling .
Arthritis - Inflammation of one or more joints which can
result in joint pain, stiffness, swelling and reduced range of
movements .
• Monoarthritis - Inflammation in one joint
• Polyarthritis - Inflammation in 5 or more joints or joint
groups
CAUSES OF MONOARTHRITIS
CAUSES OF POLYARTHRITIS
CAUSES OF POLYARTHRITIS
TYPES OF JOINT PAIN
1.Mechanical joint pain - eg. Osteoarthritis
2.Crystal induced arthritis - eg. Gout
3.Septic arthritis - eg.Staphylococcal & gonococcal
arthritis
4.Inflammatory joint pain - eg. Rheumatoid arthritis,
Psoriastic arthritis
5.Traumatic joint pain - eg. Fracture, Ligament tear
6.Neoplastic joint pain
• Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common form of
arthritis and is a major cause of pain and disability in
older people.
• It is characterised by focal loss of articular cartilage,
subchondral osteosclerosis, osteophyte formation at the
joint margin and remodelling of joint contour with
enlargement of affected joints.
OSTEOARTHRITIS (MECHANICAL JOINT
PAIN)
OSTEOARTHRITIS
GOUT (CRYSTAL INDUCED
ARTHRITIS)
Gout is the most common in flammatory arthritis in

men and in older women . It is caused by deposition of
monosodium urate mono-hydrate crystals in and
around synovial joints.
Clinical features :
Rapid onset, severe pain, worsened in the early
morning, extreme tenderness , marked swelling with
overlying shiny skin
RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS
( INFLAMMATORY JOINT PAIN)
Rheumatoid arthritis is a common form of inflammatory
arthritis. It is characterised by infiltration of synovium with
lymphocytes, macrophages, dendritic cells amd plasma
cells
Clinical features :
Joint pain, swelling and stiffness affecting the small joints
of the hands, feet and wrist in a symmetrical fashion
FRACTURE (TRAUMATIC JOINT PAIN)
Fractures are a common presenting symptom
of osteoporosis.
Clinical features:
Localised bone pain which is worsened by
movement of affected limb or region
SHOULDER PAIN
ELBOW PAIN
HIP PAIN
KNEE PAIN
