Daniel Scobie
Dear Prospective Employer
I have been in the trades since before the age of 12, thanks to my Dad.
At the age of fifteen I was enrolled in a practical high school where 70 % was hands on and 30%
academic. Topics were small engines, welding, sheet metal, automotive service, auto body repair, blue
print reading, retail sales, drafting and horticulture. I was fortunate to acquire a summer position as
grounds keeper for three summers in a row at this high school.
During high school, I was able to enroll in an Oil Burner Mechanics certificate course at Sault College.
Upon graduation, I attended George Brown College for a 26week Gas Fitter1&2 certificate course.
It was the first of its kind. My teacher, John Dutton, the author of the Gas Utilization training manuals,
really pounded gas fitting in to our heads. Out of 30+students, only 7 completed the G1 program.
I was fortunate to have an old world master tradesman take me under his wing. I stayed with him for 12
years as a sheet metal and HVAC+R tech, until he retired.
I missed the north and returned to Sault Ste. Marie and got to enhance and practice my
HVAC Trades with tradesmen, engineers, and project managers on large government projects. I was
also introduced to residential HVAC.
I went to work with Swift, a railroad contractor, on Hudson Bay Railway from Saskatchewan to
Churchill Manitoba for a five year project where I was multitasking with camp utilities, ordering
supplies, fuel transfers, health and safety, equipment and hydraulic repairs on track machines, ordering
parts, driving transports and trucks with self-loaders, maintenance and operation of heavy equipment
and rebuilding of equipment in the shop during winter season.
For the last few years I have been working on Vale sites in and around Sudbury, Ontario on industrial
mine heating and ventilation. Also, I was processing steam gas burning equipment in one of the most
dangerous environments in industry.
I hold a GZ Driver’s License and with my education and experience and I am looking for a change in
work experiences.
Thank you to the men and woman in management, Health and Safety, and Security fields that keep
workers safer every day.
Yours Truly
