2. Conventions
Typically, music videos of the electro-pop genre feature the following elements:
- Frequent costume changes
- Elaborate hair and makeup
- Bright colours or eye-catching patterns
- Female singers appealing to the male gaze (Mulvey) through showing clevage or short
skirts/t-shirts
3. Aim for my Costume
I had originally planned to have Olivia wear regular clothes for the exterior shoot and
more revealing clothes for the greenscreen parts. However, there was issues in
availability and the greenscreen could not be completed.
I will breakdown in more detail in the following slides the elements of Olivia’s clothing
and those of her younger self. The overall aim was for the clothes to seem normal and be
relatable, as well as making her seem ‘invisible’ to fit the themes of the song.
4. Outfit #1 Long, black hair worn
down to appear
feminine, notions of
Butler’s gender
performativity
Tight, black trousers
and shirt to seem
neutral but highlight
physique and appeal
to the male gaze
(Mulvey)
Black boots to maintain
neutrality and for
comfort due to
weather and a lot of
walking
Warm coat which seems
masculine to blur
conventions of gender
performance (Butler), beige
colouring to blend with
background and achieve
‘invisible’ effect
White beanie for comfort due to
weather and to stand out from
the rest of the outfit
5. Outfit #2

Black tights under a black skirt to
appeal to the male gaze
(Mulvey) while being
comfortable for Olivia and the
weather conditions
Black boots to maintain
neutrality and for
comfort due to

Overall black outfit
contrasts with the
bright colours of the
diner and makes
Olivia stand out
more as well as
evoking elements
of the ‘dark-pop’
genre Black jumper with a
turtleneck due to
weather conditions, but
tight to show figure and
