Why was the White House built? Washington D.C.’s city planner and architect, Pierre Charles L’Enfant, needed a presidential house for the new country and new capital. To find the architect, a contest was held in which nine submissions were entered. George Washington chose the winning design. James Hoban won the contest that enabled him to become the architect for the White House. Being an Irish immigrant, he was influenced by architecture that he had known in his home country of Ireland. He fashioned the White House after the Leinster House in Dublin, Ireland, that now houses the Irish Parliament.
