COPD is caused by cigarette smoking, occupational chemicals, air pollution, infection, genetics, alpha anti-trypsin deficiency, and aging. It affects the ciliary cleaning mechanism of the respiratory tract, causing airflow obstruction and trapped air that greatly distends the alveoli and decreases lung capacity, leading to increased mucus, irritation, infection and damage to the lungs.
