Lesson: 1 of 12 (Introduction to new unit!)
Lesson Title: “What is the Definition of a Biome?”
Lesson Objective: To be able to define a biome using Google Earth (GIS).
Key Terminology: Ecosystem, Biome, Rainforest, Tundra, Desert, GIS, Location, Global, Adaptation, Climate.

Last lesson, pupils finished the Crime unit of work. This lesson is the start of a new unit “Rare Rainforests”
where pupils will study the biome’s climate, animals, plants, people, threats and sustainability.
Starter:
Pupils log on and turn screens off.
Objective and introduction to Ecosystems.
Pupils write title and date in their books and copy definition of ecosystem.
Pupils rank ecosystems in order of size from smallest to largest.
Structure (with timing): Starter; Teaching strategies; Activities – VAK; learning styles: groupings/pairs /independent;
differentiation; Plenary etc.
0-10 Students log on and turn off screens. Objective and starter activity.
10- 20 Introduction to the task- using GIS- run through tundra exemplar on sheets. L2L examples of how to use
and record information, graph reading and photo interpretation.
20- 43 Pupils work independently using Google earth (VAK) to all complete Rainforests section. G&T students
can also aim to complete the deserts section.
43-45 Ryan to print off work and students pack away computers.
45- 50 Peer marking of Rainforests section. Pupils swap sheets with pupil next to them. Use G&T students for
exemplar answers.
50-55 Definition of a biome- pupils work in pairs (AfL) to come up with a definition of a biome. Copy definition
From the board into their books.
55-60 Plenary: Putting definition to the test PPT slides questioning (AfL). Put sheets in books and pack away.
60 Dismiss students a row at a time.
