Landscape has become a focus point of interest in the last 15 years. This is also mirrored in international conventions. So was landscape introduced as specific catagory into the world heritage conevtions of UNESCO. The EU Council of Ministers has drafted principles and guidelines on spatial development, which stress the great importance of landcape for identity and social well being and the need for a good landscape management for all types of landscapes, including urban landscapes and degraded landsapes. Last but not least the Council of Europe has formulated the European Landscape Convention, which sets great value on the participation of the civil society in developing and managing the landscape. The cultural aspects of landscape have been neglected in many countries for a long time, defining landscape as a pure feature of nature. But more and more the cultural aspects of landscape, including the tangible and intangible cultural heritage, have become a focus of research and understanding. Landscape, and especially the cultural heritage, have become important factors for identity building. In all aspects of research, communication and management civil society can play an important role and people can engage themselves. This can be done through prospection projects, archaeological excavations, heritage management programmes, the construction of cultural paths and many other activities. Such projects help to inform people about their own landscape at their own doorsteps and make them wardens for a good landscape management and heritage protection. The lecture shall show the potential of (cultural) landscape as a place for civil society to engage and give examples of how a positive engagement of people for their landscape can be achieved.

The multitude of devices has brought about a multi-connected life. Between streaming services and twitter news feeds, PokemonGo and Linkedin marketing, what will be the role of radio tomorrow? Mixd-Reality tools (AR, VR, smart objects) are suddenly allowing radio broadcasters to tell more immersive and interactive stories. This important paradigm shift comes with a whole new potential but harnessing it requires an understanding of what’s going on and, more importantly, where it’s going... According to Jonathan Belisle, digital storyteller and inventor of one of the world’s first augmented reality book for families (Wuxia the Fox), the radio of tomorrow will be the soundscape of a multi-screen daily experience where artificial intelligence and smart objects will allow for stories to be more meaningful for the audience. The radio industry is about to be profoundly disrupted by a tidal wave of new platforms. Are you ready for it? This will change the way we experience music and connect with artists at a social level and it will be of a magnitude that goes much further than Napster and streaming services. From Shazam to Instagram and from Snapchat to chatbots, Belisle's in-depth analysis of the potential and limits of today’s technologies, has taught him that storytelling will soon be deeply impacted by data feeds from intelligent machines that will track our every movements and compile all our interests to influence our daily listening habits. As the best way to predict the future is to invent it, he has harnessed tools like Google’s AI to create mixed-reality experiences that take audiences from a state of passive listening to a state of active engagement. That’s why he believes that tomorrow's multi-connected life has already started today.

Some critics may have you believe that computer game studies lack theoretical rigor, that games cannot afford meaningful experiences. I agree with them, sometimes, but I also believe that a richer understanding of computer games is possible, and that this understanding can shed some light on related issues in the wider field of Digital Humanities. My main area of research has been designing and evaluating how contextually appropriate interaction can aid the understanding of cultures distant in time, space, and in understanding to our own. This field is sometimes called Virtual Heritage. In Virtual Heritage, tools of choice are typically virtual reality environments, and the projects are very large in scale, complexity, and cost, while my projects are often prototypes and experimental designs. I have many challenges, for example, morphing technological constraints into cultural affordances, and avoiding possible confusion between artistic artifice and historical accuracy, all the while evaluating intangible concepts in a systematic way without disturbing the participants’ sense of immersion. To help me judge the success or failure of these projects I have shaped some working definitions of games, culture, cultural understanding, cultural inhabitation, and place. However, these concepts and definitions are not enough. I also have to now tackle the issues of simulated violence, artificial “other” people, the temptation of entertainment masquerading as education, and the difficulties inherent in virtually evoking a sense of ritual. My lecture, then, is a discussion into how game-based learning, and the study of culture, heritage and history, might meaningfully intersect.

Abstract: Cultural geo-analytics (CGA) is an emergent area that studies the geographical dimension of the production and consumption of cultural objects, relying on digital data and spatial methods. In this talk, I will explore how, as GIS experts, we can fruitfully collaborate with researchers in cultural studies, media studies, and digital humanities to shape new interdisciplinary agendas. Given the conceptual and empirical centrality of place in CGA, I will then discuss the challenges in its representation in GIS by offering an overview of several case studies. 28 Apr 2022 Bio: Andrea Ballatore (he/him) is a Lecturer in Social and Cultural Informatics at King’s College London. From 2016 to 2021, he was employed as a Lecturer in Geographic Data Science at Birkbeck, University of London. Previously, he worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the Center for Spatial Studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara. In 2013, he completed a PhD in Computer Science at University College Dublin on geographic information retrieval and natural language processing. His current work combines cultural analytics and digital geographies, and is centred on collaborative projects with academic and corporate partners, including the Ordnance Survey and Facebook.
