CONVENTIONS OF HORROR
CONVENTIONS
Storyline
The storyline of my film is a group of four characters are set the difficult task of surviving a zombie
apocalypse. This is a very conventional storyline for the horror genre and similar films exist in the
world such as George Romero’s Dawn of the Dead, Diary of the dead and many others.
CONVENTIONS
Camerawork
In my planning I have planned a range of different shot types including long shots, wide shots,
close ups, mid shots and angled shots. This is conventional for the horror genre as it gives a range
of different views of the scene and clips as well as showing the emotion of the characters. It
allows for the viewer to relate more with the film and also allows for tension building editing and
better action within the trailer.
The camerawork that will be included in my trailer will be similar to that seen in other horror films
such as Dawn of the Dead and Friday the 13th.
CONVENTIONS
Sound
In my production plan, there are many conventional sounds that will feature in my trailer. This
includes things like slow and tense non diegetic music, that is used in almost every horror movie or
trailer, and ambient sounds like screaming., that are also very common. This will enable me to
make my trailer very intense. And faster paced music will be used for the action sequences and
scenes. This is very conventional for the genre. The sound of zombies will be used throughout the
trailer. The trailer as a whole will have quiet sections as the streets will be abandoned.
Sounds like these are very conventional, an example with similar use of music and ambient sound
is The Purge, and the sound of zombies is also conventional.
CONVENTIONS
Mise-en-scene
The mise-en-scene in my product will be very conventional, there will be lots of low key lighting,
this is very conventional for the horror genre and feature in films ranging from The Purge to
Paranormal Activity. The location of my film will be a rural environment, including abandoned and
run down buildings, as well as a corn field and a fairground, the abandoned location is very
conventional for a zombie horror as the apocalypse would have taken over the world. The
costumes will be dirty and blood stained clothes, this will show that the characters are fighting for
survival and are going without luxuries such as clean clothes.. Props will include make shift
weapons such as metal bars and bats, showing that the characters are using all the resources
they can get.
