tend to break the ride that the new wall is orthogonal to those that it abuts. In the Azolla root, for example (see
Ch. 2, Fig. 2.2), the cell walls in the formative divisions may join the existing walls at angles of 40° or less, and
may sometimes be curved and not of minimal area. Unequal divisions are always found as precursors of cell
differentiation; it seems that an asymmetrical distribution of cell contents between the daughter cells is
necessary for differentiation. Often, before division, the nucleus moves to one end of the cell or there is already
an asymmetric distribution of cytoplasm so that division results in art unequal distribution of cytoplasm to the
daughter cells. This is characteristic of the divisions that give rise, for example, to sieve tube and companion
