This is the main stage presentation I made at the AIGA National Design Conference in Denver, CO on 13 Oct 2007. It's been annotated to include additional captions on some slides that were images only when I presented them. With print publishers increasingly being pushed online the design department is being forced to adapt and manage across multiple mediums. This talk tries to identify common mistakes and differences between the mediums and tries to get designers to think seriously about how best to carry brands onto the internet.
JESS3 Featured in Computer Arts for foursquare I VotedJESS3
JESS3 was featured in the September 2011 issue of Computer Arts Projects for our work with foursquare for the 2010 Elections. Together, we visualized checkins to polling locations across the United States in real-time by leveraging Google and Pew's data (via Voting Information Project) and foursquare's platform + community.
Our client, Eric Friedman of foursquare, shares the background to the project and the brief, while our Director of Information Design, Robin Richards, shares our approach and the project's outcome.

The internal brand narrative needs villians as much as heroes.Verbal Identity
It's easy when you're writing the brand narrative to focus on looking for heroes inside. But don't forget what Hollywood knows: the bigger the villain, the bigger the hero.
Digital Marketing Cases: presentation for BBDO Moscow Digital WordshopZigurds Zakis
Second presentation I have made in BBDO Moscow Digital Wordshop, September, 2009 - selected case studies, success stories and strategies for marketing solutions in digital age
In the presentation I point out how the ability of visual communication to express core customer and brand messages across multiple forms of media has not changed much. However, shifts from locomotion to services, from pages to rich interactions, from sites to content experiences, and from content creation by webmasters to everyone online have introduced unique opportunities and constraints that the presentation layer of Web applications needs to account for.

Book Formatting: Quality Control Checks for DesignersConfidence Ago
This presentation was made to help designers who work in publishing houses or format books for printing ensure quality.
Quality control is vital to every industry. This is why every department in a company need create a method they use in ensuring quality. This, perhaps, will not only improve the quality of products and bring errors to the barest minimum, but take it to a near perfect finish.
It is beyond a moot point that a good book will somewhat be judged by its cover, but the content of the book remains king. No matter how beautiful the cover, if the quality of writing or presentation is off, that will be a reason for readers not to come back to the book or recommend it.
So, this presentation points designers to some important things that may be missed by an editor that they could eventually discover and call the attention of the editor.

Control

If narrative is the guiding
principle of traditional design,
then control is its most
important tool.

But the guiding principle of
interactive media is not
narrative—it’s behavior.
22. Khoi Vinh

Let’s Split Up Subtraction.com
In digital media, presentation and content are
separable. Design is not baked in.
The designer has seemingly lost control.
51. Khoi Vinh
Subtraction.com
That’s not necessarily the case. What we’re
interpreting as a loss of control is actually a
multiplicity of states.
52. Khoi Vinh
Subtraction.com
The challenge has changed. There are more
states to design.
But also: the user demands a certain amount of
control over these various states.
53. Khoi Vinh
Subtraction.com
The designer still has a job to do.
How does the content behave in each of its
possible states?
What is the overall experience of the user?
55. Khoi Vinh
Subtraction.com
Digital media is as different
from print as a speech is
