2010 was a big year for the Open Data community, some Ordnance Survey data was made freely available, data.gov.uk launched with a raft of data from across government, government published an open data license and then a new government took over who seem to be equally committed to Open Data. So far we have seen Local Government brought into the Open Data initiative (albeit with a bit of a struggle) and most recently aggregated crime data has been published on police.uk.
- So is everything rosy in the Open Data garden or are there dark clouds looming on the horizon?
- In a geo-context it seems that if we can pin a pair of coordinates to something someone will put it on a map, perhaps we need to pause before we map?
- Is Open Data the same as openness and transparency in a government context?
- What kind of accountability will access to Open Data deliver?

Hurricane Katrina caused massive destruction along the Gulf Coast in 2005. Photos show homes demolished by the strong winds and high floodwaters that swept through New Orleans. People were trapped in their homes without food, water, or power for days. The storm proved highly dangerous for those who did not evacuate and risky for first responders involved in search and rescue efforts. Despite the widespread damage, some survivors were able to make it out alive.

Social media platforms have evolved from spaces for personal exchanges to environments for real-time news and information, influencing how media organisations respond to breaking news, how journalists go about their reporting and whose voices are heard. The media logic of emerging communications technologies, where knowledge, expertise and authority are networked and distributed, chafe with existing, hierarchical models of journalism. This presentation will discuss how social media are reconfiguring definitions of journalism and professional constructs of the journalist, as media professionals negotiate a hybrid news ecosystem that blurs the line between the public, the private and the corporate.
A pedagogy of abundance

This study examined the effects of television food advertising on preschool children's snack choices and parental purchasing requests. Researchers showed children advertisements for healthy or unhealthy snacks and then observed which snacks the children selected. They also had parents complete surveys about purchasing requests. The results showed that children who saw ads for unhealthy snacks were more likely to choose those snacks and ask their parents to purchase them. However, ads for healthy snacks did not significantly increase children's choices of or requests for those foods. This suggests television food advertising influences young children's preferences and purchase requests toward unhealthy snacks.

Fact or Fiction: The Philosophy of Fictions in IS Research
In its quest for knowledge and understanding the Information Systems (IS) field has generally been torn between positivist and interpretivist approaches. However, in this paper an approach that accepts many of the underlying beliefs of both positivism and interpretivism is
presented: the fictive approach. This blended approach - most comprehensively developed by Vaihinger - reveals
how much of what we do in the IS field can be seen as
creating and working with fictions. From the abstractive to
the aesthetic all fictions are evident to some extent in the
IS discipline. While the fictional approach has its challenges
it is paradigmatically creative, rich and holistic; all important
and arguably necessary characteristics when it comes to understanding Information Systems. Perhaps by
legitimizing and exploring fictions in all their forms the IS
field may finally mend the tear between the two warring paradigms and move forward in a bid to achieve the disciplines raison d'etre: making better sense of Information Systems.

Power Grid Model
The global energy transition is placing new and unprecedented demands on Distribution System Operators (DSOs). Alongside upgrades to grid capacity, processes such as digitization, capacity optimization, and congestion management are becoming vital for delivering reliable services.
Power Grid Model is an open source project from Linux Foundation Energy and provides a calculation engine that is increasingly essential for DSOs. It offers a standards-based foundation enabling real-time power systems analysis, simulations of electrical power grids, and sophisticated what-if analysis. In addition, it enables in-depth studies and analysis of the electrical power grid’s behavior and performance. This comprehensive model incorporates essential factors such as power generation capacity, electrical losses, voltage levels, power flows, and system stability.
Power Grid Model is currently being applied in a wide variety of use cases, including grid planning, expansion, reliability, and congestion studies. It can also help in analyzing the impact of renewable energy integration, assessing the effects of disturbances or faults, and developing strategies for grid control and optimization.
