Construction of Road
Pavement
Road pavement, also known simply as pavement or
road surface, refers to the top layer or surface of a
road that is designed and constructed to provide a
durable and smooth driving surface for vehicles.

4. 1.Asphalt (Bituminous):Asphalt pavement, also known as blacktop
or macadam, is a common type of road surface. It consists of a
mixture of asphalt binder (a petroleum-based product) and
aggregate (such as crushed stone or gravel). Asphalt pavements
are flexible and can adapt to slight ground movements.
2.Concrete:Concrete pavement is made of cement, water, and
aggregates (sand, gravel, or crushed stone). It is rigid and
typically used for high Traffic. roads and highways.
3.Composite Materials:Some pavements use composite materials,
which may combine asphalt and concrete or other innovative
materials to optimize performance and durability.
Pavements can be made from various materials,
including:

5. TYPES OF ROAD
PAVEMENT:
Flexible Pavement:Asphalt Concrete (AC) Pavement: This is the most
common type of road pavement. It consists of multiple layers, with the top
layer being a smooth, black asphalt surface.
Rigid Pavement :Concrete Pavement: Rigid pavements are made of
concrete slabs. They are very durable and capable of withstanding heavy
loads. Concrete pavements are commonly used for highways and high-
traffic areas but can be more expensive to construct initially.
Composite Pavement: This type of pavement combines both flexible and
rigid elements. It often consists of a concrete base layer and an asphalt
surface layer.
Permeable Asphalt/Concrete: These pavements are designed to allow
water to penetrate through them, reducing surface runoff and aiding in
groundwater recharge. They are environmentally friendly and help
manage stormwater.

6. CONSTRUCTION OF FLEXIBLE PAVEMENT :
• Subgrade Preparation:The subgrade should be properly compacted to achieve the desired
density and stability.
• Subbase Installation :In some cases, a subbase layer is added above the subgrade to improve
load-bearing capacity and drainage. Common subbase materials include crushed stone, gravel,
or recycled materials.
• Base Course Installation :A base course, typically made of aggregate materials, is placed on
top of the subbase to provide additional support and distribute loads. Proper compaction is
essential to ensure a stable base.
• Asphalt Binder Course :The next layer is the asphalt binder course, which consists of a mix of
asphalt binder and coarse aggregates. This layer provides strength and durability to the
pavement.
• Asphalt Surface Course :The final layer of the flexible pavement is the asphalt surface course.
This layer consists of a mix of asphalt binder and finer aggregates, creating a smooth and wear -
resistant driving surface.

7. 1.Subgrade Preparation:The first step is to prepare
the subgrade, which is the native soil or existing
roadbed upon which the pavement will be built.
2.Subbase Installation:In some cases, a subbase
layer is added above the subgrade to improve
load-bearing capacity and drainage. Common
subbase materials include crushed stone, gravel,
or recycled materials.
3.Base Course Installation:A base course, typically
made of aggregate materials, is placed on top of the
subbase to provide additional support and distribute
loads

4.Surface Or Wearing Course:
The concrete should be placed over the entire width of bay in successive batches as a
continuous operation and topmost layer is laid about 10 mm higher than the actual profile
for further The top layer should also be laid to the required camber and gradient, while
placing the concrete it is rolled with suitable tool to eliminate voids tamping.
5.Curing Process of Cement Concrete Road:
Curing consist of checking the loss of water from the concrete slab, and keeping the fresh
concrete slab moist during hardening period. Initial curing is done for 24 hrs. By this time,
the concrete becomes hard enough to walk upon and then wet mats are removed and final
curing done for 2 to 3 weeks.
6.Fillings of Joints and Edging:After curing, the surface is cleaned and washed. The
joints are then properly filled-in attains with a suitable sealing compound.
9. CONCLUSION:
2024/2/26 9
Road pavement is the foundation of our transportation
infrastructure, and its quality directly impacts the safety,
efficiency, low cost and higher productivity From our road
networks. It is essential to invest in well-designed,
durable, and sustainable pavement solutions to ensure
the continued smooth flow of goods and people.
