This document provides an overview of performance boosting techniques for IBM Lotus Notes clients. It discusses factors that can slow down Notes client startup and performance, such as outdated hardware, large data directories, and old ODS versions of databases. It also presents methods for improving startup speed and performance, like upgrading ODS versions, reducing unnecessary files in the data directory, enabling TCP/IP port compression, and standardizing client configurations using policies. While policies can help optimize many settings, they have limitations like depending on a properly configured client and not providing full customization.

Christoph Adler presented on performance tuning HCL Notes clients. He discussed how to optimize local databases to the latest ODS format, configure hardware and Java settings for optimal performance, and measure client performance using tools like client clocking logs. Regular maintenance like keeping software updated, cleaning obsolete files, and optimizing network settings can boost client speeds. Understanding how the cache works is also important to avoid unnecessary traffic increases from deleting it.
In this Workshop Christoph Adler will show you detailed how you can use MarvelClient Upgrade to configure, prepare and run the best HCL Notes installations ever. You will learn how easy it is to get all users upgraded to the latest and greatest version of HCL Notes in lightspeed, seamlessly and without any disruptions for users. Additionally to "upgrades" he will show how to create "initial" installation packages for HCL Notes being able to deploy this on new computers AND the fully automatic way to create an HCL Notes installation for virtual platforms like Citrix and VDI including all needed optimizations and performance tweaks.

Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software FuzzingAftab Hussain
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).

Observability Concepts EVERY Developer Should Know -- DeveloperWeek Europe.pdfPaige Cruz
Monitoring and observability aren’t traditionally found in software curriculums and many of us cobble this knowledge together from whatever vendor or ecosystem we were first introduced to and whatever is a part of your current company’s observability stack.
While the dev and ops silo continues to crumble….many organizations still relegate monitoring & observability as the purview of ops, infra and SRE teams. This is a mistake - achieving a highly observable system requires collaboration up and down the stack.
I, a former op, would like to extend an invitation to all application developers to join the observability party will share these foundational concepts to build on:
Threats to mobile devices are more prevalent and increasing in scope and complexity. Users of mobile devices desire to take full advantage of the features
available on those devices, but many of the features provide convenience and capability but sacrifice security. This best practices guide outlines steps the users can take to better protect personal devices and information.

5. Your Notes Client: The Beginning
Let's start at the beginning of (Notes) time
– (don't worry, if you just got started with Notes 9 then this session should still be of value ;-))
– Version 4, 5, ...
– C:LotusNotesData install
– Single user client, no Eclipse
Add to that one or two upgrades and machine changes
– Template and ODS updates (or not)
– Changes to data and program directories -> C:Program FilesIBM
– Hopefully proper moving of files to new hardware
5
6. Your Notes Client: The Beginning
Add to that server moves/consolidations
– Outdated workspace icons, bookmarks
– Outdated replicator page entries and orphaned local replicas
Possibly also:
– Deployment of local replicas and/or archives
• Pretty much anywhere users like to put them
– Server name or mail domain name changes
• Leaving outdated icons/bookmarks/replicas behind
– ID re-certifications and/or name changes
• That may or may not have propagated properly via AdminP
6
11. What makes your Notes client START
slow (and how to make it faster)
11
12. What makes your Notes Client start slow
Client Version
– If you‘re not on at least 9.0.1 yet ->
9.0.1 is a significant improvement
– Pre-loading the client might also be
recommended
~50% of the entire data volume in
the Data directory changes on a
DAILY basis in most setups
– 5 - 10% in Dataworkspace
( up to 300 files)
– DISABLE Antivirus scanning for at
least *.ns* in Data Directory. Period.
12
19. Speaking of Policies…
Speaking of policies
– The ($Policies) view in the local personal address book may contain
• a.) outdated policies from (very) old releases, e.g. after having upgraded from 6 to 8
• b.) policies from before a user rename
– This can significantly increase client startup times by 40 to 80 seconds(!)
– clean out your ($Policies) view in local nab from time to time (e.g. every quarter/half
year) with e.g. a mailbox postopen script
Yet another solution for performance problems
– To prevent re-provisioning of the workspace directory upon EVERY client startup...
For Standard (=Eclipse) clients on Citrix, make sure that the rcp.platform.id is the same
across all citrix servers
• /NotesProgramDirectory/framework/rcp/rcplauncher.properties
– saves 20+ seconds
19
20. What makes your Notes PERFORM
slow (and how to make it faster)
20
39. The Policy Challenge: Policy Debugging
If a policy isn't working, check:
– Server based Policy Synopsis Tool
– $Policies view in the local names.nsf
– Location document home server
– Mail file admin server
• Should be the home server
If all else fails:
– debug_policy=2 along with
– debug_outfile=C:policy_debugging
– Restart the Notes client
39
