18. Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, head to White House for meeting By Jake Sherman Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid made a trip to the White House on October 7, 2009 to talk strategy concerning Afghanistan. The House Speaker and Senator attended the meeting alone without the other chairmen and leaders, all of whom attended a similar meeting the previous day. 19. Congress Acts to Extend Hate Crimes to Cover Gays By :Jim Abrams Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi addressed the controversial topic of hate crimes including those committed against gays. Pelosi states, “No American should ever have to suffer persecution or violence because of who they are, how they look or what they believe. “ Her words heavily relate to the gay Wyoming college student, Matthew Shepard who was murdered. This hot topic has nearly been approved several times, yet full coordination has never been achieved. This time, the votes for the bill were 281-146, the opposing voters mostly Republicans who did not believe the crimes should be categorized as hate crimes. Supporters of the bill say prosecution should only take place if bodily injury is sustained and no minister or protester could be targeted for expressing opposition to homosexuality.
