Police orchestra of Bavaria plays for Himalaya school children
On 26 November the police orchestra of Bavaria will hold a concert in Munich’s
Theatine Church (Theatinerkirche) in support of a mountain school in Leh
(India), which was destroyed by recent flooding. The initiator of the event is the
non-profit organisation Stella*Finance e.V.
The Himalaya mountain school in Leh in the Indian region of Laddakh was partially
destroyed when the Indus River recently flooded. To enable the children to continue
with their schooling and to finance the purchase of learning materials Stella will host
this charity concert on 26 November 2010 at 19:30. With the motto „Music enables
Education“ the Bavarian police orchestra will play works from Frescobaldi, Strauss,
Hoche, Dvorak, Lauridsen and van der Roost. On this evening the musicians will
relinquish their pay and the entrance fees will be donated towards replacing
schoolbooks. Last year already the Bavarian police orchestra, the only professional
brass band of the Bavarian Police, supported Stella with a charity concert in the
Theatine church.
Christine Stahl, vice president of the Bavarian state parliament, is the patron of the
event. “According to a recent UNESCO study more than half a billion children still live
in abject poverty. More than 100 million children cannot acquire even basic skills in
reading and writing, as they do not even receive primary education“, the politician says.
“Every concert ticket sold will pay for two school books for the children in Leh. By
restarting classes as soon as possible we want to provide the children with continuity
and support during this difficult period,“ explains Christian von Hoerner from the
Munich department of Education and Sports. As the city’s director he is responsible
education and vocational training in Munich and will speak about engagement in
charity work on the evening of the concert.
Tickets can be bought for 18 Euro at Munich Ticket: 0180 / 54 81 81 81 (0,14 €/
min from German fixed-line phones, or at 0,42 €/min from mobile phones),
www.muenchenticket.de and all other established ticket offices as well as from
6pm at the concert venue on 26 November. Additionally there is a "4 for 3" offer
for this concert. Whoever brings three friends gets his/her own ticket for free.
*Stella is a non-profit group (“gemeinnütziger Verein”), which provides educational opportunities
to under-privileged children and teenagers. Stella functions as a bridge-building organisation
between educational institutions and sponsors. Our projects, such as a centre for street children
in India, a mountain school in the Himalayas and a war orphanage in Vietnam are developed as
best practise solutions to the challenges of enabling education. Financing of the projects is
mainly through child sponsorships, individual donations and sponsored memberships of Stella,
as well as fundraising. More information is available at
