Afumați is a commune in the east of Ilfov County, Romania,
composed of a single village.
Comuna Afumaţi is located in Plain Vlăsiei on riverbanks
Pasarea , 15 km northeast of Bucharest. It consists of a single
village , Afumati , village of residence.
Afumaţi whole village is a former curia Constantin
Cantacuzino,
built in the late seventeenth century and transformed in the
nineteenth century, a monument of national interest,
classified as architectural monument. It includes the church "
Assumption" ( built in 1691 ) , the mansion and the enclosure
wall .
Even though the village of Afumati is documented in
1510, traces discovered on today's commune suggest
that the origins of Afumati as a human settlement are
much older. The history of C.C. Giurăscu (History of
Romanians, 1937, vol. II) presents a map of Wallachia
between 1418-1601 where Afumate appears as a place
of a great battle, which dates back to 1530, when the
ruler who then obtained the name Radu from Afumati
defeated a Turkish army to dethrone him.
In the village of Afumati lies the former court of
Constantin Cantacuzino, built at the end of the 17th
century and transformed into a nineteenth century, a
historical monument of national interest, classified as
an architectural monument. It includes the church
"Assumption of the Virgin" (built in 1691), the manor
and the wall of the enclosure.
According to the census carried out in 2011, the
population of Afumati commune is 7,919 inhabitants,
up from the previous census in 2002, when 6,613
inhabitants were registered. [1] Most of the inhabitants
are Romanian (85.26%), with a minority of Roma
(4.89%). For 9.19% of the population, ethnicity is
unknown. [2] From the confessional point of view, most
of the inhabitants are Orthodox (89.44%). For 9.22% of
the population, confessional membership is unknown
