This document analyzes the complexity of local economies in the UK using measures of economic complexity. It finds that (1) southern areas and London tend to have higher complexity, but there is variation within regions, (2) higher complexity is linked to better economic outcomes even after controlling for other factors, and (3) preliminary analysis suggests higher complexity areas have more diverse business communities and greater networking, especially across communities. The document discusses implications for local economic development policy and limitations of the study.
