2. The Research Topis I Chose Is...
My topic this semester for class is the legalization of marijuana, and what
legalizing it could do. Legalizing marijuana doesn’t just make it available for
people to smoke. It also creates another source of tax for the government,
because it would be highly taxed. Another big thing that would happen by
legalizing marijuana is the amount of people that will no longer being arrested for
the use or possession of marijuana, and they police being able to worry about
more important matters.
3. History of Marijuana
In 1937 marijuana was prohibited, on a federal level, however still legal for
medical use. Until 1970, when cannabis was made federally illegal in all ways.
Since then it has been a struggle for the plant to become legal again, but in the
past decade there has been many states that have gone against the U.S. laws
and began to do what they think is right.
4. Individuals Involved
1. Bernie Sanders → Senator and Former Presidential Candidate
Introduced a legislation in 2015 that would end the federal prohibition of
marijuana.
1. Jesse Ventura → Former Governor of Minnesota
He has the same views on legalizing for both medical and recreational use.
1. Justin Trudeau → Prime Minister of Canada
Relevant in this topic because he was one of the biggest advocates for
legalizing marijuana in Canada.
5. Questions I Have About Legalizing Marijuana
1. Is there a chance that the U.S. will completely legalize marijuana?
2. What will happen to those who have been arrested and imprisoned for
marijuana?
3. If legalized, what regulations will be put on marijuana?
4. Will the driving laws be similar to that of drinking and driving?
6. A Viewpoint about Legalizing Marijuana I disagree with...
A viewpoint I do not agree with is police officers not being able to smoke
marijuana when they are off duty. Obviously on duty it has the chance at impairing
their vision or judgement, however I believe after a day of work they should be
able to smoke at home. Alcohol impairs vision and judgement as well, but police
officers are aloud to go home and drink off the clock, so why can’t they smoke? I
believe that if there is no law against recreational marijuana then anyone who is of
age should be able to smoke it in the privacy of their own home.
