2. Introduction
 Community health nursing is the practice of promoting
and protecting the health of individual, family and
community using knowledge from nursing, social and
public health sciences. Community health nursing is also
based on principles of general nursing.

3. DEFINITION OF CHN
 According to Freeman 1970, "Community health nursing is a collaborative
application of nursing and public health measures within the framework of the
total community health efforts”.
 According to APHA 1982, "Public health nursing is the synthesis of the body of
knowledge from the public health science and professional nursing theories for
the purpose of improving the health of the entire community“.
 According to ANA 2000, "Community health nursing is a synthesis of nursing
and public health practice applied to promoting and preserving the health of
populations. Treat "Population as a whole". Focus on individual, family, groups,
community utilizing health promotion, health maintenance, health education
and management, coordination and continuity of care for meeting
population needs

4. Scope of CHN
The scope of community health nursing is as wide as community, Community health nursing is
concerned with people who are healthy as well as sick children, adults, old, male or female.
Com- munity health nurse provide family centered health care services rather than individual
centered. Community health nurse has wide scope for different aspect of society in prevention
and promotion of health.
 Home care nursing: Coordinated home care services assist individuals of all ages and their
families to maximize their health and/or social well-being which allow them to remain in their
own homes. In the larger communities, nurses are employed as home care nurses and work
solely with the community home care programme. Services including case management,
home nursing, personal care, assistance with activities of daily living, palliative care,
rehabilitation, teaching and family support and meals on wheels and foot care.
 Nursing home: Community health nurse also provide health services in nursing home like
treatment to sick and providing counselling to the client.
 MCH and family planning: The practice of nurse involves providing independent care to
women during antenatal, intranatal and postnatal as well as care of the newborn. It may
include some gynecological services such as routine PAP smears, family planning and-
treatment for minor vaginal infections. A certified nurse midwife practices with a health care
agency that provides medical consultations, collaborative management and referral.

 School health nursing: School health nurse provides direct healthcare to students and staff,
provides leadership for the provision of health services, provides screening and referral for health
conditions, promotes a healthy school environment, promotes health, serves in a leadership role
for health policies and programmes and serves as a liaison between school personnel, family,
community and health care providers.
 Geriatric nursing: Geriatric nurse practitioner is an adult nurse practitioner with specialization in
care of the older adult, Geriatric nurse practitioners are trained in the special needs of the aging
adult, with emphasis in health promotion, health maintenance and functional status, The geriatric
nurse practitioner works with a client and the family to manage existing health problems so as to
promote independence and self care. The client population is usually 65 years and older.
 Industrial nursing: Occupational and environmental health nursing is the specialty practice that
provides and delivers health and safety programmes and services to workers, worker populations
and community groups. The practice focuses on promotion and restoration of health, prevention
of illness and injury and protection from work related and environmental hazards.

 Mental health nursing: Mental health nursing services of a community health nurse
including early diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation, psychotherapy, use of modern
psychotropic drugs and after care services.
 Domiciliary nursing: Community health nurse focused at domiciliary nursing services
including maternity services health supervision and disease prevention services and
services for ill. ness and accidents.
 Rehabilitation services: Community health nurse provides care in rehabilitation centers. Re
habilitation nurse is a nurse who specializes in assisting persons with disabilities and chronic
illness to attain optimal function, health and adapt to an altered life style. Rehabilitation
nurse can practice in hospitals, impatient rehabilitation centre, outpatient rehabilitation
centres, long-term care facilities, community and home health settings, insurance
companies and private practice.
 Nurse Epidemiologist: Nurse epidemiologist is also called as an infection control nurse who
monitors standards and procedures for the control and prevention of infectious diseases
and other conditions of public health significance including nosocomial infections.

8. PRINCIPLES OF CHN
1. The recognized needs of individuals, families and communities provide the basis for
community health nursing practice. Its primary purpose is to further apply public
health measures within the framework of the total effort.
2. Knowledge and understanding of the objectives and policies of the agency
facilitates goal achievement. The mission statement commits community health
nurses to positively actualize their service to its end.
3. Community health nursing considers the family as the unit of service, its level of
functioning is influenced by the degree to which it can deal with its own problems.
Therefore, the family is an effective and available channel for the most of the
community health nursing efforts.
4. Respect for the values, customs and beliefs of the clients contribute to the
effectiveness of care to the client. Community health nursing services must be
available sustainable and affordable to all regardless of race, creed and color or
socio-economic status.

 Community health nursing integrated health education and counselling as vital
parts of functions. These encourage and support community efforts in the
discussion of issues to improve the people's health.
 Collaborative work relationships with the co-workers and members of the health
team facilitates accomplishment of goals. Each member is helped to see how
his/her work benefits the whole enterprise.
 Periodic and continuing evaluation provides the means for assessing the degree
to which community health nursing goals and objectives are being attained.
Clients are involved in the appraisal of their health programme through
consultations, observations and accurate recording.
 Continuing staff education programme and quality services to client are
essential to upgrade and maintain sound nursing practices in their setting.
Professional interest and needs of com munity health nurses are considered in
planning, staff development programmes of the agency .

 Utilization of indigenous and existing community resources maximizing the success of the
efforts of the community health nurses. The use of local available ailments and linkages with
existing community resources, both public and private, increase the awareness of what care
they need and what is entitled.
 Active participation of the individual family and community in planning and making decisions
for their health care needs determine to a large extent the success of the community health
nursing Programmes. Organized community groups are encouraged to participate in the
activities that will meet community needs and interests.
 Supervision of nursing services by qualified community health nursing personnel provides
guidance and direction to the work being done. Potentials of employees for effective and
efficient work are developed.
 Accurate recording and reporting serve as the basis for evaluation of the progress of planned
programmes and activities and as a guide for the future actions. Maintenance of accurate
records is a vital responsibility of community health nurse as these are utilized in studies and
researches and as legal documents
