- Why is the environment important. What do you think makes up an environment?
- 4 parts of an environment – we should be thinking of all equally.
- Artifacts include physical, verbal, and behavioral aspects on an environment that have agreed-upon meaning for members of that environment. Landmarks, buildings, or other physical aspects of the setting with particular intuition or sending a message of concerning what is important there. This is not a positive demonstration of creating an environment through artifacts- why? How does this you feel? What could you do to improve this hall through artifacts?
- This is a positive example of artifacts in an environment. What about this hall is positive? How does this make you feel?
- Values reflect “what the members of the culture assert to be important” (Kuh et al., 1991, p. 96). Values underlie decisions that are made on campus and how actions are judged. Values are often reflected in the mission statement of the college and appear in such official instructional documents. ( EX. Holding programs that promote values). By having this white board up (and not erasing it) it demonstrates that this language is okay- therefore demonstrating poor community values. Can be seen as attacking to individual and offensive to others in the hall.
- This campaign that was done in reaction to a hateful whiteboard messages in residence halls. These are three RAs that wanted to respond demonstrating their expectation for community values.
- Assumptions are the least apparent part of the culture because they seem to exist implicitly and are rarely mentioned. Beliefs that members use to define their role, their relationship to others, and the nature of the organization in which they live in” (Kuh & Hall, 1993, p.7) (EX: Creating a supportive, friendly community that communicates) As you can see the reaction to the RA and flipping the posters the community does not have respect for the RA and possibly one another.
- This video was recorded by a resident at RISD to show her friends at home where she was living. This was done within the first month of moving in. You can see that the hall community is strong, trusting and there is an assumption of respect and mutual interests.
- Perspective define “the way things are done” on campus or appropriate/norm etiquette. Determines what is acceptable behavior for students, faculty, staff and other sin various institutional settings. (Ex. Keeping floor clean/ facilities up to date) Here you see the RA and resident not reacting to the destroyed lounge. This shows that there is no expectation that this will be fixed or cleaned. Next you see the residents speaking about the poor conditions of another floor.
- Here you see two residents happy to be walking around the hall, very different than the last video. This shows positive perspective of the community in which lives there.
