Editor's Notes
Thank you for joining me today. I know that some of you have heard about Commotion or even know of a station currently using Commotion. Today I hope to answer many of your questions and show you just what Commotion is all about. Before we are done, you will see what makes Commotion different and how it will fit into your current radio station.
Of course if you want this, you’ve got to have this. You can’t monetize without a mobile audience and today your listeners have dozens of ways to listen to your station through experiences you neither own nor control. Today, we will discuss why creating this MOBILE hang out for your listeners is the ENGINE which makes monetization a reality. However, before we talk about this Hang Out, let ’s start with the tools Commotion provides when it comes to Monetization:
Let’s start with Synced Ad’s Today’s listeners and advertisers are changing. Have you noticed how your current advertisers radio ads now ask listeners to visit their facebook page? No longer are your advertiser’s content with just a simple message but they expect your listeners to take action. However, think of what is being asked when an advertiser asks the listener to go and “like” their facebook page. The listener needs to hear the ad, remember the advertiser ’s facebook page, remember to go “ like ” them when they get in front of a computer or mobile device and actually hit the “ like ” button. What if you could deliver an experience which allowed the listener to see a “like” button at the same time they are hearing the radio ad? This is the idea behind Synced Ads. Synced Ads allows a listener to both hear and see the advertiser ad at the same time. This could be a facebook like, GPS directions, a coupon, redemption code, offer… The list goes on and on.
Next is Push Notification: Push Notification is one of the most powerful tools a radio station has access to. The key of course with Push Notification is the listener must have the stations app installed on their phone. Once installed, even when a listener isn’t listening to the station, the station can reach out to that listener. Push Notification can be powerful when you consider a few things: Push Notifications can be sponsored. Even if the station is sending an alert to their listeners about the weather, sport scores, or the morning show, each push can and should have a sponsor. Listeners can receive push notifications, even when the stations app is not open. This becomes a major benefit when wanting to reach out to listeners for remotes, events, deals, or anything else. The ability to send push notifications to listeners based on their interest. One of the challenges of Push Notification is the fact that it goes to all of your listeners mobile devices. Commotion has created a way to allow a listener to select the type of notifications they feel are the most important and turn off those which are not. Push Notifications from your advertisers. The ability to offer your advertisers a way to deliver coupons, deals, or offers to a listener ’s mobile device is huge when you consider 98% of all Push Messages are read within the first 60 seconds.
Next: Sponsorships: One of the easiest ways to monetize Commotion is through a sponsorship. In fact, most of the radio groups using Commotion have presold the sponsorship opportunity before even going live with Commotion. The reason is pretty simple: Upon signing up with Commotion, the radio station will be promoting this amazing new experience to their listeners as much as at each break, morning show, or as a live mention. They will be instructing their listeners to download the stations new apps, visit their new website… As you can imagine, each time the app is downloaded, the website is opened, the streaming player is accessed, guess which advertiser those listeners will see. This gives the advertiser thousands in free advertising. The sponsor's logo is right on the stations splash screen of the app, directly on the website, and even in the streaming player. In addition, their visual ad is always the very first thing a listener will see, due to the fact it is always at the top of the app. When you combine this with the ability to also sell a pre-roll video or pre-roll audio clip, and the fact you can now provide detailed reporting, you can quickly see the way this sponsorship is sold before going live with Commotion.
Of course we’ve only had time to mention just a few of the monetization tools. As you can see we have many others.
We’ve talked about Monetization, so let’s talk more about the ENGINE which makes Monetization work. Like we mentioned before, the truth is, you can have the greatest monetization tools in the world, but unless your listeners are opening YOUR stations app, visiting YOUR stations website, or accessing YOUR stations streaming player, you will never be able to monetize your listeners when it comes to the mobile and digital space. Listeners today simply have dozens of ways to access the radio stations audio feed, outside of the station. This is why Commotion ’s approach is totally unique and why it works . It addresses the other half of the equation.
Let’s talk about what makes a great hang out for your listeners. First of all, you have to have Real-Time, interesting content completely in sync with what a listener is hearing on the station. (Think of a VH1 Pop-Up Video type experience) if you can remember back then. Second , it needs to have live, unique, and engaging tools for polling, Song Battling, and contesting Third, It needs to have a Live Chat feature, which allows listeners to share videos, music, audio clips, and photos, which works on any device, and brings all communication together, so any listener, anywhere can see and join into the conversation. This includes listeners calling into your request line.
Commotion has created an experience, we call The Activity Stream. The Activity Stream brings all communication from your listeners together. We’ll get into how the activity stream works in more detail when we jump into the live demo, but keep in mind it can be placed anywhere it makes sense for the station: This includes: In the station ’s mobile app, website, streaming player, or social network pages.
Of course, part of this experience is a way to manage it. We have created a control panel which allows the stations to pretty much control every aspect of Commotion. For example: Seeing the entire Message History of each listener, no matter how it came into the station. The ability to manage the song battles, polls, and contests Controlling and setting up automated content which syncs with what is happening on-air Managing the synced ads and push notifications managing word filters and block features and of course, managing which communication end points to bring into the activity stream. This includes everything from iPhone/Android messages, SMS messages, videos, audio clips, photos, instagram pictures, facebook and twitter posts. Of course the best way to experience Commotion is to take a look at a live Radio Station. Let’s go and do that now. We are going to start by looking at KFWR out of Dallas, TX
