Over the past years, I have noticed (and so have some students) that the coastal area of North East Point has been undergoing an extremely rapid degradation, turning into a ‘ghost zone’ with huge Takamaka trees dying, because they lose footing, and huge waves washing right up to the road and even flooding homes on the other side of the road. All of the underlying coral platforms that were once hidden or buried deep under the pristine sandy beach, are now exposed.
With the introduction of IGCSE exams and the concepts of fieldwork, together with a group of IGCSE students, we organized small scale field trips to measure and keep records of the changes. High schools—are you interested in creating more effective partnerships with the colleges in your neighborhood? Colleges—are you interested in more effectively reaching out to high school students in your own backyard? This type of proximity offers some unique opportunities for forming partnerships with the school next door. Come prepared to hear how two colleges and two high schools have used these relationships to their advantage, and bring some of your own examples as well.

Connecting Astronomy Content with Interactive Videoconferencing in Kindergart...Debra C Burkey Piecka
This interactive session explains research results from a study about how kindergartners form meaning while learning with interactive videoconferencing in kindergarten. The presentation will move quickly through the study's research questions and methodology to a discussion about the happenings of an international partnership between Pennsylvania kindergartners and a rural British primary classroom while learning about astronomy. Topics included the Sun, planets, galaxies, stars, and Earth and its moon. Participants will view several photos that depict artifacts from the collaboration. Attendees will have the opportunity to discuss how they can design similar activities for their own classrooms.

Chairman Reed and commissioners, thank you for giving us the opportunity to share the successes that Vision Charter School students have experienced over the past year .
In our sixth year of operation, we have 551 K-12thstudents with 541 students on the wait list.We continue our focus of being a K-12 College Prep Science and Art school. We are pleased with our students’ consistently excellent performance even with the doubling of classrooms and increase in student numbers.
Vision Charter School is committed to employing distinguished staff who are committed to the goal of helping every child achieve their full potential.VCS offers an enriched and accelerated program to all students based on the Gifted and Talented research. VCS staff provide after school tutoring to students every day of the week. In addition students offer support during advisory and lunch hour.Qualifying students receive support through Special Ed, Title 1, summer school, 504 accommodations, speech, and occupational therapy.
Vision Charter School Board, Business Manager, and Administration continue to focus on being fiscally conservative and responsible. Working closely with the staff over the past six years, we have been able to reach the goal of funding phase 1 of our permanent building set to open in fall of 2013!
We are on schedule and on budget for our building to be completed by June of 2013.
We will be able to double K-4th grade adding 132 new students. We will continue to have doubled 5th-9th grade classes .We anticipate approximately 45 10th graders and a single 11th and 12th grade classes. Elementary will continue to reside in ten portables owned by VCS until phase two is completed.
“gymacafetorium” = full gym/music room/stage, cafeteria, warming kitchen, library/media room, tech room, two science labs, and classrooms. Vision hopes to add phase two in three years. Phase two will house the elementary classrooms and the administration rooms.
