The document provides details of a redesign project for the Potrero Branch of the San Francisco Public Library. Key points include:
- The goal was to design a space to enhance reading, learning, and community through concepts of travel represented by railroads and hot air balloons.
- Target users are children and the local community based on educational attainment data of the neighborhood.
- Design includes a children's area with storytime stairs, a seed exchange space, and self-checkout machines.
- Plans include a basement storage area, first and second floor layouts, and lighting designs to bring a natural feeling while reducing costs.
Different light sources know your lighting optionsAustin Billson
Choosing the right lighting options can be difficult if you don’t know what your lighting goals are. It is not enough to just install any fixture and insert whatever lights just for the sake of having illumination at home. You can just have a bright white fluorescent light anywhere in the house, but it doesn’t mean everyone would be happy or comfortable with it. Lighting is not just a necessity, but an important factor in enhancing the beauty and comfort level of your home.

A program called "Top Library Building Trends" that was conducted at ALA Annual 2010 (June 28, 2010) by LLAMA BES.
A panel of architects, librarians and consultants will provide an overview of new and exciting ideas in planning public and academic library facilities. Topics will include the rethinking of spaces for services, new building design, and other “must have” items to keep your library up-to-date. Each panelist will provide a brief presentation with slides. The entire panel will then field questions from the audience.
Speakers: Kimberly Bolan Cullin, Providence Associates LLC, Indianapolis, IN; Joan Frye Williams, Sacramento, CA, Library Consultant and Futurist; Barbara Norland, District of Columbia Public Library, Senior Librarian, Building Projects; Jeffrey Scherer, Meyer, Scherer & Rockcastle, Ltd. Architects, Architect; Richard Sweeney, New Jersey Institute of Technology, University Librarian.
The success of libraries in the future will be determined by its ability to create stories rather than provide them. One way to accomplish this is by putting technology and people together so patrons become creators and innovators in makerspaces and other learning environments. In this full day session, discover great new learning technologies and techniques for patrons, and how to build your new fablab or hackerspace. Get hands-on with must have maker tech and build new ideas throughout the day. Arm yourself with facts for having interactive spaces and tools to get buy-in from everyone from staff to public to the IT teams. Discover where technology is heading and how we can plan with it. After building your space, the session will also cover about building your staff. Learn ways to continually train and engage the staff so the environment will constantly evolve and grow. Multiple topics and ideas will be covered so any library on any budget can implement new ideas and activities for the patrons.
Outcomes:
• Participants will learn about key design concepts when looking at their library spaces to increase collaboration and foster innovation.
• Participants will have an opportunity to not only play and experiment with cutting edge maker space gadgets; but learn which tools in the educational technology realm offer instruction on engineering, programming, robotics, and early childhood education.
• Participants will also be armed with the skills they need to not only start their own spaces; but help market, promote, and fund their spaces.
Mine metsa” sound-absorbing accessories help to organize the spaces inside bigger spaces. These ready-made artefacts can be installed anywhere, creating a customized, comfortable environment for the employees. People spend a lot of their time at work, so they should have to option to adjust their working space for maximum comfort and efficiency. The products are designed in an economically-concious way so that the packaging and shipping is very compact.

2. People usually say that we can broaden our view through
traveling. Reading is a special way of travel. Travel is an
experience of exploring and adventuring. Words record
past, and books are mediums which store those memories.
Our concept was traveling. As time goes by, technology
helps us get information faster, but books still play an
important role in our life. Some people still like to read
hardcopies rather than kindle. Our goal was to design a
space for the community to enhance the mind and relax
by reading. In our space, we encourage people to read,
play, and communicate with each other. Through traveling
and adventuring with words, our life and knowledge will be
enriched.
To symbolize travel, we used railroads and hot air balloons
as our main design ideas. Railroads on the ground also
became a wayfinding sign, which guides people to the
entire space; furthermore, we minimized the use of materials
to reduce distraction and cost. Our elegant space design
will be more focused on letting users sense the environment.
Moreover, daylighting in our design reduced the cost of
electricity and brought the warm and natural feeling inside
the entire space.

Educational data shows the highest level
of education attained by San Francisco
residents is in Potrero Hill. Over 70% of
residences have completed a bachelor’s
degree or higher, which is higher than
the San Francisco Metro (27%).
We thought this data told us that people
study a lot in this district; therefore,
the target users for this project will be
children and local community.

To bring the community closer, all the

sharing activites. They will be use in
special holidays and different hot issues.

19. Materials
We tried to minize the use of materials, and
also make it simple, clean, and bright. We
want this space attract people to feel the
calm and quiet when they are reading.
However, we still pick some bright colors in
children’s area. The materials suit for school
use and meet the fire code.
Branding Strategy
The specialty in our design was periodical
book sharing activities. The events will be held
every holiday, important historical date, and
season; such as Christmas, Valentine’s Day,
and St. Patrick’s Day, to name a few. In our
project, we designed a book sharing event for
Christmas. This event was focused on children
of the neighborhood during the Christmas
season. The goal of the event will be based
on Christmas story sharing and handmade
Christmas cards.
