The cowboy writes a letter to his sweetheart from Oklahoma Territory, where their cattle drive has stopped due to rain. They recently lost an older cowboy named Jim, who was like a father to the writer, when the herd stampeded. Though trying to give Jim a proper burial, the writer knows the landscape is not Jim's home in Texas. The cowboy misses his family - his wife, daughter Lily who has a birthday coming up, and son Bobby who he promises to take fishing. He may never return home from his last cattle drive.
