The narrator returns to their childhood home where Annie used to live, but finds the house abandoned with the door broken down. Memories flood back of playing with Annie by the old oak tree, tire swing, and creek. They recall feeding a baby fawn at dusk and stargazing. Though Annie once ran away, she promised never to leave again. However, the narrator was called to war, and upon returning, discovers Annie has passed away, the love they never had.
