We are often afraid of the

fear with ‘others’

stress when they are preparing to leave
their homes as they try and cope with
their feelings of being “marked” by
COVID-19.”

4. SOCIAL STIGMA
In the context of health, social stigma can be
defined as the negative association between a
person or a group of people who share certain
characteristics and a specific disease.

Passing negative information

Denial access
Victimization and Violence

Prevent people from seeking
health care immediately

Change social cohesion
Community may be

Drive people to hide the
illness
to avoid discrimination
Discourage from adopting
healthy behavior
because infected

across the world,
level of risks and
threats
• Spread facts, not
fear
• Choose the exact
words in talking
about this situation
• If these behavior are
seen as “typical
practices”, they
become more
accepted

10. HOW TO PREPARE CHILD-PATIENTS/SURVIVORS
● Give knowledge and understanding about the disease – age appropriate
● Teach and show empathy
● Model the positive attitude towards the disease and everything related to
the disease
● Give social support
● Do positive activity
● Keep connected
