This document summarizes a study that examines academics' perceptions of collegiality at a research university in Hong Kong. The study finds that perceptions of collegiality vary significantly by academic rank and gender. Specifically, power is seen to be vested in a mainly male full professor group. While collegiality is still widely espoused as an ideal, the competitive nature of academia means it is weakly practiced as a behavioral norm. Academics report increasing isolation and individualized competition rather than collaboration. The study suggests there is a contradiction between collegiality as an collective ideal and the demands of a performative, competitive academic culture.
