Coiled Tubing Scale Cleanout
Operation

• The CT is a continuous length of steel or composite tubing that is supplied
spooled on a large reel.
• The CT unit is composed of a reel with the CT, an injector, control console,
power supply and well-control stack.
• CT is used for intervention in oil and gas wells and sometimes as
production tubing in depleted wells.
Coiled Tubing

• Steel pipe 1” OD to 3.5” OD
• Yield strengths of 70,000, 80,000, 90,000, 100,000 psi
• Relatively thin wall
• Finite life due to fatigue cycles (bending)
Tubing

Basic CT unit comprises:
– Injector head
– CT reel
– Power pack
– Control cabin
– Pressure control equipment(PCE)
Basic Equipment Package

Injector Head
• Hydraulically powered
counter rotating chains
• Gripper blocks mounted in
chain assembly
• Injector designation based
on maximum pull
capability, e.g 30K can pull
30,000 pounds

Most injector heads have two sets of opposing endless chains
• Series of gripper blocks mounted on each chain
• Gripping profile of each suits a specific tubing size

• Forms a dynamic seal around
CT as it moves in and out of the
well.
• Allows change of packing
elements without removing CT
from well.
• Energized by well pressure from
below.
• Additional packoff force
provided by hydraulic pressure.
