The cobza is a traditional Romanian folk instrument similar to a lute. It was usually played by a bard or minstrel called a kobzar to accompany the recitation of Ukrainian epics. Though the kobza became extinct in the early 20th century, there has been a revival of playing it in Ukraine led by the Kobzar Guild in Kiev and Kharkiv.

The first three periods of Western Music History are classified as Medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque. Each period has its distinctive characteristics, historical and cultural background. A type of music from the Medieval Era is Gregorian Chant, which was mainly used in the early Christian church. Music during the Renaissance Period became an important leisure activity. Members of the upper class were expected to have received musical training. Imitative polyphony is the distinctive characteristic of Renaissance music.
Because of the slow emergence of European society from the dark ages, dozens of "mini kingdoms" were established all over Europe, each presided over by a lord who had fought for and won the land. Mostly through superstitious fear, early Catholic leaders were able to claim absolute power over these feudal lords.

The Polish language originated from the Indo-European language family and belongs to the Slavic group of languages. Within the Slavic languages there are three subgroups: West Slavic which includes Polish, Czech and Slovak; East Slavic including Russian, Belarusian and Ukrainian; and South Slavic comprising Serbian, Croatian, Macedonian, Bulgarian and Slovenian. The Polish alphabet contains 23 letters from the Latin alphabet as well as additional characters. Some of the earliest written Polish texts date back to the 13th-15th centuries and include religious songs, translations of the Bible, and poetry from different historical periods in Poland.
Bogurodzica (The Mother Of God)
- Bogurodzica is the oldest known Polish hymn from the 13th century and an important early document of the Polish language.
- It is a religious hymn praising Mary, the mother of God, and asking for personal happiness on earth and eternal life in heaven.
- Throughout its history, the hymn has served as both a religious devotion and symbol of Polish national and cultural identity as the earliest Polish text.

Byzantine music originated in the Byzantine Empire and was composed using Greek texts for ceremonial, festival, or church music. It drew influences from classical Greek music, Jewish music, and early Christian music from cities like Alexandria, Antioch, and Ephesus. Byzantine chant manuscripts date back to the 9th century and hymn texts have been found from early Greek Christianity employing classical meters. Major developments included the rise of the kontakion and kanon hymns in the 5th-8th centuries. Later, more elaborate musical settings were composed and the notation was reformed in the early 19th century by Chrysanthos of Madytos and others to simplify the complex Byzantine musical symbols.

- 2. The cobza is a traditional Romanian folk instrument, being a kind of lute.
- 8. • The term kobza is first mentioned in Polish chronicles dating back to 1331, but lute-like instruments are known to have existed in the territories now known as Ukraine even earlier, either from the sixth century, brought there by Bulgars, or possibly somewhat later by Polovetsians and Khazars. The term has a Turkic origin: "kobyz" or "khomus". The stringed folk instrument acquired widespread popularity in the 16th century, with the advent of the Hetmanate (Cossack state). • The kobza was usually played by a bard or minstrel called kobzar (occasionally in earlier times a kobeznik), to accompany the recitation of a Ukrainian epics called duma. • The kobza became extinct early in the 20th century. Currently there is a revival of kobza playing in Ukraine, due to the efforts of the "Kobzar Guild" in Kiev and Kharkiv. • The kobza was often referred to in historical sources as bandura (from Latin Pandura, via medieval Polish Barduny, i.e. a lute). The terms were interchangeable until about 1900. Eventually the unfretted "starosvitska" bandura (developed ca. 1800) appropriated the bandura name, but still was often referred to as kobza among the common folk, because of the name's historical cachet.
