My role as a photographer for a stage production is to document the process and place people and objects on stage in positions that are visually appealing yet do not obstruct others. David Bailey became a photographic assistant in 1959 before working for Vogue magazine in 1960. Along with Terence Donovan, he helped capture the "Swinging London" culture through fashion and celebrity photography in the 1960s, socializing with celebrities and becoming celebrities themselves as the first famous celebrity photographers.

For example I have to look at the stage and place everything accordingly. I also have to place people in the best position for them yet not be obstructive to any other person on set.

He also undertook a large amount of freelance work. Along with Terence Donovan, he captured and helped create the 'Swinging London' of the 1960s: a culture of high fashion and celebrity chic. Both photographers socialised with actors, musicians and royalty, and found themselves elevated to celebrity status. Together, they were the first real celebrity photographers. The film Blowup (1966), directed by Michelangelo Antonioni, concerns the work and sexual habits of a London fashion photographer played by David Hemmings and is largely based on Bailey.
