TASK 1Study the given cases. How would you, operating at any level of the four power bases, respond to the situation.
SITUATION 2Lisa decides to be a ‘passenger’in a group discussion. The other group members are not too happy about it.
Combination of Legitimate & ReferentFirst, try to negotiate with Lisa and tell her about her role in achieving their goals together in group. Then, create rules in the group.E.g. every member of the group should take turn to be the leader and in charge of particular work. (fair work distribution). In order to make sure the desired response will occur, teacher should use her power to give instruction. Perhaps Lisa will follow the order to show her respect towards her teacher.
Also, explain to her about the consequences of not participating in group discussion.E.g. she will get low mark compared to others because she does not show the team work spirit and effort.E.g. perhaps she will gain less input compared to others because she does not even try the activities. Then, by negotiating with her about individual’s roles and explaining the consequences of her chosen action, perhaps Lisa feels that the teacher is concern about her and she will try to follow the instruction in order to please the teacher.
SITUATION 3Lim misbehaves in class and the situation is potentially explosive.
Combination of Coercive & ReferentTells Lim - his action is disturbing othersAsks Lim - reason for his misbehaviourTeacher responds: his misbehaviour is going to put him into troublemakes him clear that the teacher wants the best for himteacher asks him nicely not to repeat it again
Creats a classroom contract to avoid this misbehaviour in future – discuss in classSet the rules - applies to everybodyTeacher will observe the studentsIf anybody did the undesirable behaviour again, that person will be punished. If everybody behave well, the teacher will reward them.
