Microsoft Data Platform - What's includedJames Serra
The pace of Microsoft product innovation is so fast that even though I spend half my days learning, I struggle to keep up. And as I work with customers I find they are often in the dark about many of the products that we have since they are focused on just keeping what they have running and putting out fires. So, let me cover what products you might have missed in the Microsoft data platform world. Be prepared to discover all the various Microsoft technologies and products for collecting data, transforming it, storing it, and visualizing it. My goal is to help you not only understand each product but understand how they all fit together and there proper use case, allowing you to build the appropriate solution that can incorporate any data in the future no matter the size, frequency, or type. Along the way we will touch on technologies covering NoSQL, Hadoop, and open source.
Cloud adoption continues to gain momentum, but organizations are finding limited success in their cloud migrations to date. The reason? Poor organizational planning and inaccurate cost estimates during discovery and planning can stymie success before the migration even begins. Organizations must re-evaluate what they are doing before they begin their migration, or success may prove elusive during it.
This CloudHealth Technologies-commissioned profile of US IT decision makers at firms that are currently migrating or have migrated workloads to public cloud platforms investigates common strategies and challenges associated with public cloud migration in order to identify what organizations can do during discovery and planning to ensure a successful migration.

Apache Kafka is the de facto standard for data streaming to process data in motion. With its significant adoption growth across all industries, I get a very valid question every week: When NOT to use Apache Kafka? What limitations does the event streaming platform have? When does Kafka simply not provide the needed capabilities? How to qualify Kafka out as it is not the right tool for the job?
This session explores the DOs and DONTs. Separate sections explain when to use Kafka, when NOT to use Kafka, and when to MAYBE use Kafka.
No matter if you think about open source Apache Kafka, a cloud service like Confluent Cloud, or another technology using the Kafka protocol like Redpanda or Pulsar, check out this slide deck.

We have traditionally built robust software systems by trying to avoid mistakes and by dodging failures when they occur in production or by testing parts of the system in isolation from one another. Modern methods and techniques take a very different approach based on resiliency, which promotes embracing failure instead of trying to avoid it. Resilient architectures enhance observability, leverage well-known patterns such as graceful degradation, timeouts and circuit breakers. In this session, will review the most useful patterns for building resilient software systems and especially show the audience how they can benefit from the patterns.

on-premise); data portability and
interoperability related issues; non-

all across and more such.
To avoid the bumps, it is imperative
that you realize how Cloud is
changing the Enterprise IT
ecosystem of yesteryears.
Previously, Enterprise IT used to
play the role of the “service
provider” for each business units;
but today Cloud is rapidly
changing the business processes,
the application infrastructure, and
adding complexity and
heterogeneity. To better manage
the new ecosystem Enterprise IT
needs to ensure that Cloud
services peacefully co-exist with
the existing infrastructure and
practices.
Ensuring that Cloud efforts
meet the needs of the
business — both today and
tomorrow—calls for vision,
strategic planning and
governance. To make your
Cloud journey a success, it is
important to understand and
address critical cloud related
aspects like Security, Service
Management, Governance,
Risk and Compliance,
Migration, Monitoring,
Automation and Cloud
Lifecycle Management.
The big question, however is:
how?
How do you choose the
right Cloud (Public, Private,

Hybrid) for your business?
How do you know if Cloud
is really the perfect model
for your business?
How do you decide which
all services should you

How would you gain the

innovation and gain competitive
advantage. Cloud is enabling them to
take on today’s unprecedented
challenges, such as:
?Survive disruptive economic
conditions
?Bring about the necessary
transformation to achieve
exceptional business results
?Rapidly address the competitive
threats and satisfy user demands
?Deliver higher levels of efficiency
and responsiveness for lower costs.
The New
The stage for Cloud computing is all set — the
constant push for a faster, better and more
cost-effective technology delivery model is
increasing the demand. You may embrace
Cloud or Cloud services when:
Application(s) running in your IT

Our
Cloud
Reference
Architecture
Our architecture strategies are fundamentally based on non-rigid
taxonomies from technology and product perspective. We, at HCL,
believe that while the concept can be rigid, the underlying
technologies can vary depending upon customer
situation, what market has to offer and what is in store for
all of us in future. When we look at today's world which
is centered on service oriented architecture
(SOA), a loosely coupled taxonomy is a key to
the introduction of new and emerging
technologies. Our Cloud Computing group
is continuously engaged in evaluation of
different technologies that can substitute or
complement one another in the reference
taxonomy that we have built.

Why Building
Private Clouds
Makes Sense
There are 2 approaches to build a
Private Cloud—Top Down approach,
starting from service management
and governance, and moving down
toward virtualization; the Bottom
Up approach being vice versa
nterprises today are looking at Cloud
c o m p u t i n g f o r v a r i o u sEreasons—some need to take advantage
of capex to opex conversion while others
are looking at streamlining IT Services
support and maintenance.
From a CEO's perspective cloud
computing can reduce time for 'Go-to-
Market' and eliminate capital
expenditure; on the other hand, for a CIO
it can provide quick scale-up and scale-
down options, savings from maintenance
and upgrades and enable self service
and increased control.
While Cloud Computing to some
may seem to be a magic bullet, certain
areas reveal difficulty and confusion
when scratching the surface. Few
questions that often linger in the minds of
CIOs wanting to adopt Cloud are:
What will happen to my existing
assets?
Who ensures adherence to regulation
& compliance for my IT environment
on Cloud?
How to ensure security and privacy of
my data in the cloud?
While Public Cloud is one option
that provides easy and economical scale
up and down for compute and platform
requirements, organizations have their
own reservations in adopting Public
Clouds that include accountability, SLAs,
and compliance. Public Cloud SLAs and
contracts are vague for which providers
can seldom be held accountable. This
leads organizations to look at an
alternate delivery model—Private
Clouds, wherein enterprises can have
more control and can enforce
accountability.
What organizations are looking
from a Private Cloud is participation by;
different internal departments who can
subscribe and participate in its usage.
Few things to note before adopting a
Private Cloud:
Maturity of Virtualization in the
Enterprise: More maturity leads to
easy adoption. If maturity is less,
organizations can leap frog with the
right approach
Maturity of ITSM Processes
Implemented: Service Catalog,
Financial Management, SL A
?
?
?
?
?
management etc.
IT Organization Culture: Adoption of
Private Cloud essentially changes how
services are delivered internally. Does
the organization have service provider
aspects to benefit from Private Cloud?
Is the organization mature enough to
adopt the ownership model for Private
Cloud?
Has the Application Assessment been
done for Private Cloud adoption?
Bandwidth is a neglected piece and
should be taken care while estimating
costs.
Executing the Big 'C'
Private Cloud is being seen as creating
the biggest impact on the way cloud will
shape in the coming future. It is therefore
no surprise that many hardware/software
vendors who on their own or jointly are
bringing their Private Cloud offerings to
the market. However, enterprises must
remember that there is always an
alternate to create one's own Private
Cloud using reference architecture.
Usually there are 2 approaches to build a
Private Cloud—the Top Down approach,
which starts from service management
and governance and moves down
towards virtualization and the Bottom Up
approach, which begins from
virtualization and moves up to
?
?
?
?
governance and service management.
No matter what approach you take,
the most important question to think
about is the aspect of service governance
and IT service management on Cloud. Is
ITIL still relevant in this new model? If so in
what shape and form?
Broadly speaking, ITIL processes like
incident management, change
management, problem management,
release and deployment, etc. work the
same way in cloud environment as they
work in a non-cloud environment. The
processes mostly affected in cloud
environment are financial management,
service catalog management, service
level management, event management,
and configuration management.
Another important question is
around monitoring and management of
IT environment on Cloud. Depending on
which delivery model you eventually
choose, there will be a difference in the
way monitoring and management works
for the IT landscape. In Public Clouds it is
the operating system and above that
needs to be taken care, in Private Clouds it
is hardware onwards that needs to be
taken care.
The ideal way to go around this is to
have an on-demand model for
monitoring and management, wherein
users have the option to choose services
from a service catalog. An option for start
and stop of these services as and when
required is also a desired option.
Cloud means different things to
different people. One should have a well
defined objective for adopting Cloud.
Going forward we will see more and
more organizations adopting cloud. One
of the biggest hindrances for Public
Cloud adoption is around security and
compliance, which makes the case for
building Public Clouds very strong. For
enterprises looking at eliminating
concerns around security and
compliance along with maintaining
control over their IT set-up, Private Cloud
indeed might be the manna from
heaven!
