An integrated unit of inquiry Here’s the plan the kids (and their families) were given  Clothing unit – Room 3 2011
(and this is how we used ICT) Word, publisher, excell, powerpoint, internet – search engines, google images, digistore, digital camera flip video scanner – wiki page
We will find the answers to our own questions What are shoes made of? Where does cotton come from? Why do Scottish people wear tartan? What can clothing be made of apart from cotton and wool? How does wool get made into clothing? We learnt about using a search engine – (Ask Jeeves) We found some useful information on Encarta We ‘Presented’ our findings using publisher Research Task
We will give a short prepared talk about an item of clothing we like. We used the Flip Video for feedback and viewed exemplars from 3 years ago (we got to see how some of the older students did this task) English –
English We will write about clothing Argument What is good about wearing a uniform? What is bad about wearing a uniform? ‘When we go on trips we can see who is from our school because of their clothes’. Ryan Personal Recount Clothes we like to wear ‘My ballerina dress makes me feel like a princess when I put it on’. Shay Report writing Clothes that keep us safe and healthy ‘Gumboots keep your feet warm when you go out in the winter’. Caleb We published our writing using word
We will read library books and journals to learn more about clothing. ‘The Smartest Giant in town was about  a giant who gave away his flash new clothes to animals who needed help. Then he wasn’t flash but he was kind.’ By Maata We did some Arb tasks which our teacher put into our student folders (this saved paper!) We used publisher to complete some reading responses  Our teacher set up a learning pathway on digistore English
Geometry What designs and  patterns do people use on clothing? Why do they do this? We used the scanner to save our work Maths –
Maths Statistics How do you find out and record information about types of clothing people wear? Eg. What type of shoes are we wearing today? What colour clothes did people wear to mufti day? We used Microsoft excel to create bar and pie graphs
Material world How do fibres get made into fabrics?  We used a Digital Microscope to see them up close   Science – Fibres and fabrics
Do groups of people dress differently? Why? We found out about this through our research topics and the articles and stories we read ‘Tartans are made out of wool. Every Scottish clan  Has their own design. It shows they are Scottish and which family they belong to. They wear them on special occasions.’   By Sean and Ryan.  Social sciences
We used a Publisher template – we found images on the internet about traditional clothing for different nationalities
Can we create a piece of clothing? What would we need to be able to do this? We used the digital camera to show how we created our clothing. Technology
How can we use clothes as props to ‘get into character’? How do we build belief? What gestures and expressions should we use when we dance to the silly hat store? We used the Flip Video – this gave us instant feedback Drama and Dance
What are the Maori words for clothing? We created Powerpoint presentations and used animation  – we found clip art pictures then made our words make an ‘entrance’. Te Reo

Health- How do items of clothing  keep us safe and healthy? We used publisher to create posters to remind people  to wear protective clothing.   Here’s Maata’s poster. 	Ryan created this table.
We took photos of what we wore on Mufti Day, recorded our voices and put together a powerpoint. Here’s one of the slides…. ICT
Shay This is Shay on Mufti Day.
I think this unit worked well because it’s an age appropriate, relevant  topic. There were also plenty of resources. ICT use helped us to work faster, create better quality work, get instant feedback, see things close up, access information easily. It helped lots!

  • 4. We will find the answers to our own questions What are shoes made of? Where does cotton come from? Why do Scottish people wear tartan? What can clothing be made of apart from cotton and wool? How does wool get made into clothing? We learnt about using a search engine – (Ask Jeeves) We found some useful information on Encarta We ‘Presented’ our findings using publisher Research Task

  • 6. We will give a short prepared talk about an item of clothing we like. We used the Flip Video for feedback and viewed exemplars from 3 years ago (we got to see how some of the older students did this task) English –

  • 8. We will read library books and journals to learn more about clothing. ‘The Smartest Giant in town was about a giant who gave away his flash new clothes to animals who needed help.   • 10. Maths Statistics How do you find out and record information about types of clothing people wear? Eg. What type of shoes are we wearing today? What colour clothes did people wear to mufti day? We used Microsoft excel to create bar and pie graphs
  • 11. Material world How do fibres get made into fabrics? We used a Digital Microscope to see them up close   Science – Fibres and fabrics
  • 12. Do groups of people dress differently? Why? We found out about this through our research topics and the articles and stories we read ‘Tartans are made out of wool. Every Scottish clan Has their own design. It shows they are Scottish and which family they belong to. They wear them on special occasions.’ By Sean and Ryan. Social sciences

  • 14. Can we create a piece of clothing? What would we need to be able to do this? We used the digital camera to show how we created our clothing. Technology
  • 15. How can we use clothes as props to ‘get into character’? How do we build belief? What gestures and expressions should we use when we dance to the silly hat store? We used the Flip Video – this gave us instant feedback Drama and Dance
  • 16. What are the Maori words for clothing? We created Powerpoint presentations and used animation – we found clip art pictures then made our words make an ‘entrance’. Te Reo

  • 21. I think this unit worked well because it’s an age appropriate, relevant topic. There were also plenty of resources. ICT use helped us to work faster, create better quality work, get instant feedback, see things close up, access information easily. It helped lots!
