In this slide, I will teach you about a gram-positive rod which is Clostridium botulinum. I will tell you about its diseases, transmission, pathogenesis, characteristics, lab diagnosis, treatment, and prevention in a short and easy way.
3. CNS DISEASES
• Botulism
• Descend paralysis, Flaccid paralysis due loose tone of muscles
• Fatigue weakness, feeling tired
• Vertigo, dry mouth and difficulty in swallowing and speaking due cranial nerve
weakness
• Paralysis or weakness of the face & chest muscles, limbs arms, and legs
• Respiratory failure.
• Ptosis, Drooping of the upper eyelid ,lazy eye due tired muscles cause blurred
vision
• Diplopia, Perception of 2 images of a single object
4.
5. GIT DISEASES
•Gastroenteritis, inflamation of intestinal
mucosal membrane
•Bloody diarrhea, blood in stool
•Cramps involuntary contractions of muscle
with pain
•Infant botulism has been associated with
ingesting raw honey
7. PATHOGENESIS
• Spores to survive When failure to sterilize food during
preservation
• Spores germinate in anaerobic environment and produce
toxin
• Toxin is heat labile Therefore food eaten without proper
cooking implicated GIT symptoms
• Botulinum toxin, Exotoin have protease that cleaves snare
protein involved release of acetylcholine at myoneuronal
9. LABORATORY DIAGNOSIS
•Serum or stool or in food Check toxin
•Serological tests detection of toxin as
antitoxin or antibody or production of
disease in mice but not useful
10. TREATMENT
•Antitoxin to type a,b, and e made in
horses
•Respiratory support for respiratory
failure
•Penicillin G or metronidazole
