Clinic In A Can are innovative, self-contained medical clinics built in shipping containers. These container clinics are converted in the US and deployed, ready to use, anywhere in the world, providing an important resource for medical disaster relief or in areas with poor infrastructure. We already have sent these portable clinics to Haiti and Sudan to provide international medical relief. 1. Hospitals of Hope Prepares Clinic In A Can for Haiti Relief

response to last
week’s devastating
earthquake, local
nonprofit Hospitals of
Hope is working with
organizations already
on the ground in Haiti
to provide short and
long-term medical
relief.
Many hospitals and
clinics were destroyed
by the earthquake, and medical personnel are currently working out of tents as
they attempt to treat the wounded. To meet this urgent need, Hospitals of Hope
is constructing self-contained medical clinics in 40-foot shipping containers
called Clinic In A Can to be sent where the need is greatest.
Rebuilding hospitals will take years, but Hospitals of Hope plans to have the
first of these clinics—dubbed a “Clinic In A Can”— on the ground in Haiti within
six weeks. “It’s a practical solution to not only their immediate healthcare needs
but also their long-term healthcare needs,” according to Michael Wawrzewski,
founder and CEO of Hospitals of Hope.
Each container clinic will contain two exam rooms and a laboratory, as well as a
small storage area, and will be packed full of medical supplies to be used in the
initial relief effort. Hospitals of Hope will begin by constructing two clinics. If fund-
ing permits, Hospitals of Hope plans to construct a small hospital in the coming
months by combining three shipping containers in a “U” formation. This hospital
will contain a surgical suite and recovery area, an x-ray, an inpatient area, exam
rooms, and a laboratory.
Hospitals of Hope previously constructed a Clinic In A Can in 2005 which was
initially utilized in Hurricane Katrina relief efforts and was then sent to Les
Cayes, Haiti. This clinic is currently being put to use by relief workers, as refu-
gees flee from Port Au Prince to the surrounding communities.
