Ian Roberts is Red Redemption´s and Fate of the World´s creative designer. Ian was one the plenary speakers of the Games for Nature Seminar held on November 2011, in Cambridge. Find more about the event and the GamesforNature initiative at www.gamesfornature.org.
Ian believes the best strategy for conservationists is to expand pre-existing games (such as Final Fantasy, etc.) to add serious topics so that people come away with some extra learning instead of creating games focused solely on the conservation message. Players should be able to discover – they do not want to be lectured or preached at. Ian cautions that innovative games take a long time and can be challenging to create and perfect. However, finding an unlikely audience can be much more valuable for a cause than preaching to the choir. Based on his experience with Fate of the World, he said that forums are an amazing place to watch your players discuss the game content, especially if that game content is relevant to real-world challenges. For example, the forum for Fate of the World has people talking about issues, getting familiar with terms and talking about solving real-world problems. It’s great! Fate of the World is sold on Steam, and approximately 15% of people complete it. It’s quite hard, but selling fine.

What next for business in a climate constrained world?
France will host the 21st UN Climate Change Conference in order to establish a binding agreement to limit global warming to 2°C. Limiting warming to below 2°C is important to avoid crossing climate tipping points that could lead to uncontrollable and catastrophic climate change impacts. However, some experts argue the 2°C target is already too high and 1.5°C is the boundary between dangerous and extremely dangerous climate change. Urgent climate mitigation is needed along with preparations for climate adaptation, as the impacts of climate change such as sea level rise and extreme weather could seriously disrupt societies and economies.

1. Climate change is a complex, long-term problem involving interactions between climatic, environmental, economic, political, social and technological processes. There is still uncertainty around fully understanding climate change.
2. Reducing greenhouse gas emissions, known as mitigation, involves transitioning away from fossil fuels to low-carbon energy sources. Many technologies exist now but are not fully utilized, and all economic sectors can pursue energy efficiency.
3. Equity issues around distribution of resources between countries, regions, and generations must be considered in climate policies and solutions. Developing countries have no emissions targets but are expected to pursue low-emissions development paths.
IAIA Climate Change Special Symposium report
The two-day symposium hosted by the World Bank and IAIA in Washington D.C. brought together 180 climate change and impact assessment professionals. The purpose was to foster collaboration between the two communities and discuss how development institutions are incorporating impact assessment into their climate change strategies. Key themes that emerged included: 1) the need to integrate climate change with other environmental issues; and 2) the pressure on impact assessment to integrate climate change assessment into its processes to better understand project impacts on GHG emissions and the environment's impacts on projects. Strategic environmental assessment was highlighted as having an important role in climate change adaptation and mitigation when bringing together environmental and social issues before project-level assessments.
Global Climate Change

The Precautionary Principle
You have probably taken many precautions today. You may have buckled your seat belt, eaten a healthy
breakfast, driven the speed limit, or bought some organic produce. However, you may have taken some
intentional risks as well. Perhaps you had that second helping of bacon or said yes to skydiving this weekend.
In some cases, we do things to avoid risk, and at other times, we decide to take on an additional risk for some
real or perceived benefit. We balance the level of risk we decide we can tolerate from an activity with the
personal benefit we anticipate receiving from it. As a society, we have to make policy for a large number of
people with different tolerances for risk and different perspectives on the benefits of taking those risks.
Policy makers can use the precautionary principle to guide the decision-making process when the risks of a
particular action must be weighed against the benefits. Although there are many versions of the precautionary
principle, the Wingspread Statement on the Precautionary Principle is commonly cited. It states, “when an
activity raises threats of harm to human health or the environment, precautionary measures should be taken
even if some cause and effect relationships are not fully established scientifically” (Adler, 2011/2016, p. 21).
It may seem obvious that precautions should be taken in the face of risk to health or the environment;
therefore, the question is not whether or not to take precautions at all. Instead, the question is whether or not
the precautionary principle itself is needed and whether it may actually be detrimental to the very things it is
meant to protect.
In the reading for Unit I, Jonathan Adler’s position is that, although precautionary measures should be taken
when there is uncertainty regarding risks to public health and the environment, the precautionary principle
should not be used to guide policy. Adler believes that the broad application of the precautionary principle
could do more harm than good, stall technological progress, and even make us less safe than we would be
