8. Warming of the climate system is now unequivocal,
since the 1950s, Amounts of snow and ice on mountains continually
diminishing;
The sea levels continue to rise,
Greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere maintain a rising
trajectory;
On Temperature, each of the last three decades has been successively
warmer than any of the preceding decade since the year 1850.
In fact, the 1983 – 2013 represents the warmest 30 year period on record.
Ten of the warmest years occurred in the past 12 years with 2014 ranking as
the warmest year on record.
10. 1997/98 El Niño estimated to have caused damage worth more than Sh123 billion ($1.2 billion) in
Kenya
Diverted significant funds and resources to handle emergency, infrastructure restoration,
Caused massive damage to sanitation infrastructure, disruptions in communication links, clean
water and electricity supply,
Led to temporary loss of livelihood for millions of Kenyans,
Most sectors affected: agriculture, services or industry sectors with spillover effects leading to loss
of livelihoods
The physical dislocation experienced as a result of floods strains habitats and leads to more pain
and suffering
Generally, for economies heavily reliant on rain-fed agriculture, climate change contributes to
food insecurity – droughts and floods disrupt agricultural practices!!
Climate change is therefore a critical developmental issue!!
