Editor's Notes

  • #2 Description: Currently, 2nd Base Originals is a web based company. Their sewing network is made up of people who want/need to work from home especially those with health issues.  They are primarily following a "Just in Time" or "Made to Order" manufacturing method.  This means that the product is created when an order is placed.  This way they don’t have to hold huge amounts of inventory, therefore no warehouse costs, passing cost savings to their customers.  This also ensures that only materials that are needed are in use and that labour is expended only on goods that will be shipped to the customer. Purpose: “We support people to be at the centre of their lives, to be empowered and in control regardless of life circumstances, or because of it. We hope it brings to them some fun, informative connections as well as some simple solutions to their own ‘wardrobe malfunctions’.” – 2nd Base Originals
  • #3 Description: The supply of renewable energy is a function of the energy availability in the environment and location of the renewable energy generation system.  Intel will assess the application environment to determine the potential energy availability in order to design a system that will harness the largest amount of energy possible using the capital budget provided.  Intel will design a system that utilizes an optimal combination of renewable energy sources (solar, wind, geothermal, etc.) in order to maximize system performance and minimize overall system cost ($/watt).  Intel can design and engineer a system to safely meet the specific energy needs of every energy user.Products: - Optional web-based monitoring system.- Custom built wind turbine towers engineered specifically for the turbine and for the design loads at the installation site for 3kW, 5kW, and 10kW.- Custom built solar trackers and racking systems.- Each unit is engineered and certified to resist all loading per the manufacturers specifications.- Each Unit is certified to resist loading at each specified installation location.
  • #4 Due to a significant increase in production, Rhinokore has moved into a 110,000 square foot manufacturing plant located in Armstrong BC. Within this state-of-the-art facility, their patented technology is produced from start to finish. Product: Rhinokore’s proprietary honeycomb manufacturing technology fuses select materials into a honeycomb structure. Rhinokore has the capability to make honeycomb from a variety of materials, with a selection of cell diameters at thickness from 3mm to 150mm. This continuous process allows for structures to be formed to any length. Next theyinject a low density polyurethane foam which improves the structure’s physical properties by up to 1200%. The foam acts as a stabilizer, filling the cells and preventing the honeycomb from buckling under stress.Foam filled honeycomb has the unique ability to both withstand strong loads with good stiffness, while yielding to a shape when deflected, giving a spring-back effect. Other core technologies break at their stress point, Rhinokore returns this energy throughout the structure giving unprecedented strength to weight ratios. These honeycombs are perfect for:Rig Mats - Rhinokore mats don’t absorb water like wood mats. Our mats weigh the same going into a site as they do leaving a site - Rhinokore mats don’t rot, split when frozen, or splinter, such as wood - Rhinkore mats don’t sink – they float - Rhinokore mats are environmentally friendly using sustainable building block materials and 100% synthetic design Engineered and Insulated R40 Tanks for Frac & Water Management ProjectsTanks are designed to take up minimal space by setting up at the edge of the lease.Fits on just 2 truckloadsQuick erect time, quick teardown.R40 tank with R20 floating lidSaves money!Fiberglass TanksThese light, tough, portable tanks provide significant strength and impact resistance. The honeycomb construction offers a light weight, robust tank that can be delivered to the most remote job sites. The polyurethane foam insulation provides excellent performance for cold storage applications and for remote areas where freezing is a concern.
  • #5 From Jim Letersky:Spoke with Paul May15.  The spring break in the oil-patch has given them some breathing room.  Expects rental/sales of tanks to pick up soon..  He has ordered 2 new machines for making the honeycomb cores from Germany, which has caused a bit of a strain on his operating capital, not allowing him to manufacture for inventory. He has been entertaining many potential investors/partners in the last while.  In fact, he chose to skip the GP oil show because he has 2 groups coming in from the US.They are in the process of completing the IRAP application to complete the engineered drawings for portable bridges for use in  environmentally sensitive areas. They have also commenced building truck campers on a small scale on orders from dealers (money up front.)  There may be a time when Bigfoot gets reincarnatedIt is no secret that Paul is looking for investors to carry out expansion plans.  Its also no secret that the quality of potential investors is steadily improving.  His visitors today came in their corporate jet from Houston.  You have to realize he's had a lot of tire-kickers come throughI don't see any problem in saying he has chosen to increase his capacity for making honeycomb.  I would skip the cash flow part.
  • #6 What the CRI  has meant  “Everyone talks about innovation but what I don’t think people understand is the process involved in innovation.  To me you have to think about 3 other words that are linked  and cannot be separated from the word INNOVATION  and they are CHANGE, FEAR AND TRUST.  You cannot have innovation without the recognition that change is needed.  But for most people it is fear that will break the link in  the chain that is needed to move forward.  Until a few years ago I never considered myself an innovator so the fear that myself  and other innovators I’m sure must feel is at times a major hurdle to overcome.  This fear is a fear of criticism, financial failure, embarrassment in the community, failing your family, colleagues and fear of failure itself.   So without gaining the feeling of  trust and acceptance from  somewhere you cannot overcome the fear.  Trust takes time to build and I believe that the CRI is a place I can trust to discuss freely the ideas and concepts in order to innovate. “Conventional pipeline construction can disturb a lot of territory. Traditionally, the pipes run anywhere from 3 to 48 inches in diameter, but the surface land disturbance around the line can range from 15 to 40 meters in width leading to serious environmental and economic problems. In response to this issue, Alberta Environment developed Innovative Pipelining Strategies (IPS), which focused on making the smallest possible environmental impact and it was IPS that inspired Randy Galbreath, owner of Stratus Pipelines. His initial innovation was the Kendal Tapered Wheel, developed to compact the trench line and return soil during winter construction. Other tools such as narrower stripping and excavating buckets, narrow chain and wheel ditchers, and other soil compaction equipment were all developed through the initiative. The whole “low impact” idea became a reality with the addition of Randy’s innovations. Now, trenches can be planned as small as possible and lighter equipment can be used to make less of an impact on the earth. In 2008 the Alberta Chamber of Resources (ACR) presented Stratus Pipelines Ltd with their Major Reclamation Award. This award recognized their innovative low impact pipeline construction system. In that same year, Devon Energy adopted this new system and was the first company to apply it to a bigger job. Because of this progressive thinking, the Canadian Association of Petroleum Poducers presented Devon with the 2009 Steward of Excellence Award for its exceptional performance in environmental practices. In June 2010, Devon Canada along with Stratus Pipelines Ltd and Alberta Environment’s Partners in Resource Excellence program were recognized by the Alberta Emerald Foundation with the Shared Footprints award. The award recognizes outstanding efforts to manage and reduce the effects of human activity on the landscape.
  • #7 David Forseth’s start-up firm is now manufacturing its first 60 flameless, self-powered hydronic heating systems, designed to operate away from the power grid. Hydronic technology uses circulating liquid for heating purposes. Besides heat, the patent-pending technology generates enough electricity to operate a pump that moves warm glycol through the heat trace. Very modest amounts of water and CO2 are emitted, minimizing the environmental footprint."A major producer is now in the second year of using our prototype units in the field and their guys love this technology. Our equipment will run for years with virtually no maintenance. The pump is magnetically driven; there are no seals or shafts," says Forseth.Financially, a key figure behind Cataflow is Houston-based Mark Adamson, who runs Tech-Seal International Inc. Another investor is Dan Vezina of SunStroke Solar Ltd., an Alberta-based developer of solar-powered pumps. While Cataflow's initial goal was supplying heat at remote sites, an off-grid, inexpensive, low-emission source of electricity could well have even more market potential. Forseth acknowledges that his company is working on boosting power output from his catalytic technology but won't yet discuss details.
