We classify organisms for several reasons: to make the study of different types of organisms easier, to group all life forms together to study as a whole, and to reveal relationships between organisms. Animals are classified as vertebrates or invertebrates, with vertebrates having backbones and invertebrates lacking them. Vertebrates are further divided into warm-blooded and cold-blooded categories based on their ability to regulate body temperature. Plants are similarly classified as flowering or non-flowering, with flowering plants divided into gymnosperms and angiosperms.
