2. Explain the concept, role, and
contributions of civil societies and
social movements to Philippine
democracy
3. Civil society
It refers to the space for collective action
around shared interests, purposes and values,
generally distinct from government and
commercial for-profit actors.
Civil society includes charities, development
NGOs, community groups, women's
organizations, faith-based organizations,
professional associations, trade unions, social
movements, coalitions and advocacy groups.
4. Some Most Important Features of Civil Society:
• Civil Society is different from both the State and
Society.
• Civil Society consists of non-governmental,
voluntarily organized associations, organizations
and institutions of the people.
• Civil Society is, however, neither opposed to state
nor to society. On the contrary it works as a
supplementary to each of the two. It, however,
works in an organized and autonomous way.
5. • A healthy and efficient democratic
system needs and integrates civil society,
society and state.
• Civil Society is constituted by the well-
organised and active presence of a number
of social, economic and cultural
associations and groups of the people.
• Both Liberalism and Marxism accept and
advocate the role of Civil Society but each
conceptualizes it in a different way.
6. ROLES OF CIVIL SOCIETY
According to Jack Krupansky (2017) the following are the role
of civil society:
• Raising awareness of public policy issues.
• Advocating for the marginalized and
disenfranchised.
• Ethical guardians. Monitoring, detecting,
reporting, and keeping a focus on ethical
behaviour in government and business.
7.
• Watchdogs. Keeping an eye on government and
business, ever alert for corruption, waste, violations
of rights, and inequalities.
• Correcting democracy deficits. Countering
corruption, weak legal structure and lack of clear
and consistent rule of law, lack of inclusiveness,
and human rights violations.
•Advocating for transparency and
accountability of both government and business
filling gaps in services. Providing services not
provided adequately by government or business,
especially to marginalized or underserved groups.
8. Some Contributions of Civil
Society Organizations:
• Lead grass-roots mobilization and advocate that
healthy diets and physical activity for children should
be placed on the public agenda;
• Support the wide dissemination of information on
the prevention of no communicable diseases in
children through balanced, healthy diets and physical
activity;
• Form networks and action groups to promote the
availability of healthy foods and possibilities for
physical activity in children;
9. • Advocate and support health-
promoting programmes and health
education campaigns for children;
• Monitor and work with other
stakeholders such as private sector
entities;
• Contribute to putting knowledge
and evidence into practice.
